The church’s doctrine of allowing the Negro membership but notits priesthood (in effect since the 19th century but not an issue until the black man’s fight forcivil rights and recognitionin the last half of this one) has been the spark that has touched off demonstrations, and evenriots, against Brigham Young University as an institution of the Mormon Church. Thestory of his struggle with himself — his unshakeable conviction that there was good in himself, in others, in mankind — and his fight to prove it makes stirring reading. It is an epic story in itself that should be appreciated by Mormon, Jew or Gentile, to use an old Morman phrase. And add to the list of those who should appreciate it, the Negro, up to a point. But Alan Gerald Cherry’s story of his converison to the Mormon Church and his acceptance, apparently without resentment, of its doctrine concerning the Negro and the priesthood, may not draw the same reaction from other Negroes. In fact, it is very possible that it may make Alan Cherry an “Uncle Tom” to a great many of them. On the otherhand, he may be instrumental in swinging other black men to his views. Only time will tell. But the bookitself is well worth reading, whether you accept Alan Cherry’s ultimate viewpointor not.It is the story of the struggle of a man for his soul’s salvation, and of his ultimate victory — at least from his viewpoint. (Knopf, $5.95) Bolivian Wedding is a story of pathos, simply told. Through flashbacks and the events of a single day, the author unravels a compelling narrative embodying war and peace, love and murder. The setting is a village graveyard in the Bolivian highlands during a wedding celebration on All Saints Say. This is the day the villagers traditionally pay homage to their deadrelatives andfriends, The wedding feasting and dancing area being held in the graveyard so the dead might share in the joy of life. It is ironic that the weddingis being held the day before the groom is to go off to war. Manuel, the once handsome Don Juan of the village, brings tragedy to the story. He had served in the army and rel blind. His empty eye sockets evoke only pity, when once he evoked quite different emotions. Manuel is impelled by the marriage feast to prove he is as good a manas he ever was. The results are disastrous. Carolyn A. Bowers (UPI) Marriage contract.
