UNBELIEVABLE... 29S ONLY FROM MyCountry, Tis of She Skylark ‘OMENSAY “it,” “this,” or “that.” Men say “she.” A farmerin a field casts a weather eye at the sky and predicts, “She looks little like rain.” A boy in a sports car boasts, “She'll do 50 in five seconds.” Nobody names a boat or a car Henry or Frank. It’s always Suzy or Daisy or Baby Doll. All this is enigmatic to us women. We aren’t sure whether we should be flattered or furious. “She’s running crooked,”broods the do-it-yourselfer at his table saw. It’s the same with the farmer andhis tractor or plow. “She” needs oil; “she” has four bottoms. This was brought forcibly to my attention the day a carpenter stopped at my house to make a few repairs. “Hold her up there,” he said, pointing to a piece of paneling. “She needs-a piece of molding on the corner, but she'll fit okay when I get her fixed.” I contemplated the paneling with a new eye. To me the piece of wood was either “it” or “this,” certainly not “she.” No woman evercalled a coffeepot or a toaster any such thing. I took my electric skillet to the repairman and didn’t say, “She doesn’t work.” But the repairman called later and told me, “She’s ready to go.” Nor have I ever called anything “he” or “him” that obviously wasn’t. Neither has anyoneelse, be he male or female. Boat, car, motor, nation, machinery—none of it is “he.” I don’t perspire in the heat and say, “He’s gonna ‘Style swing of things with the NEW TENTALIKE SHAPE. There was once a man in our town who, when speechless with admiration for either a human or a happening, shook his head slowly and paid his greatest tribute: “She’s a gunner and a good one and comes well recommended.” “ Family Weekly, May 7, 1967 |
