Show NEW FRENCH GLASSES LET YOU SEE FISH ~ rs This bouncy blonde has turned a lack: of inhibition into a wayoflife By PEER J. OPPENHEIMER Famous “FIELD AND STREAM” Magazine calls Lunette Radar Glasses “among the most unusual personal accessories on the market” .. . to “help you locate fish and under- next dance. They were at a palace party given for Bob Hope’s GI entertainment troupe, and there were gasps and fluttering eyebrows as Joey uninhibitedly kicked off her shoes as she arose from herchair. “I’m more at ease this way,” she breathed to His Majesty as he led her to the dance floor. Soon others were padding around in their stocking feet, and it’s very likely that the wiggly wonder from Rockville Centre, N.Y., starteda fashion in Thailand. Born Davenie Johanna Heatherton, nicknamed Doey and then Joey, this bouncy 22-year-old actress and dancer has turned a lack of inhibition into a way of life. It’s as apparent when she dances the monkey or the dogasit is in her throaty speech, her skimpy dresses, the once way-out but now very “in” way in which she hacks off her hair in an untamed, boylength fashion. Yet, like most of the young girls who have such an easy time identifying themselves with her, Joey is thoroughly involved in everything from politics to the war in Vietnam. And she has an opinion on everything, “How can I be indifferent to Vietnam when I have a brother who's draft age?” she asked. “What’ll happen to him this year? Or next?” She took it even more to heart after visiting hospitals in Saigon. “It was hard not to cry when | left the wards,” she said. Bob Hope insists that Joey’s exuberance was oneof the biggest assets of his show. “The GIs just went ape,” Joey confessed. “I wore a leotard and boots, and when I started singing ‘I’m Just a Little Girl Who's Looking for a Little Boy,’ they had to call out the MPs.” “Show business is in my blood,” Joey explained. Her father, Ray Heatherton, was best known for his radio program, “Luncheon at Sardi’s,” andisstill active in the entertainment business. “I never wanted to do anything but get into show biz,” Joey said. “But believe me, success didn’t come overnight. And I shed a lot of tears—like in school, when all the other kids in class made fun of me. They just hated me because I could sing and dance. “When I tried out for cheerleader, they sneered, ‘You're too good, kid,’ and put me in the highkick line instead. It was pure jealousy, if you ask me.” Though she has won fame for her high-kick dancing and pouty acting, Joey's first big break came when she was 13 and played a postulant nun in “The Sound of Music” on Broadway. Since then, she has mostly played rebellious teen-agers, but when asked if she’s rebelling against anything herself, she retorted, “Not on your life, Charlie. If that’s what you hear about me, it’s a lot of baloney.
