To help families get the most out of their trips abroad, travel agents and carriers have stepped up plans for hundreds of tours which embrace Europe, Asia, Africa, Latin America, Canada, Hawaii, and the whole world. What's more, they help to take the travail out of travel. Basically, there are two types of tours: escorted and package. An escorted tour has the services of a guide who leads the way to assigned hotels, sight-seeing and excursion buses, planes, ships, or trains, Members of such tours agree to use vehicles of transportation companies and services of the hotels with which the sponsor has signed contracts. This is necessary because arrangements must be made months in advance for groups that plan to be places at specified times. Tourists who buy package tours are on their own to a greater extent, although reservations are made for them, too. By going solo, a traveler usually has greater variety in selecting carriers and hotels. Reservations are requested’ to suit’ his schedule, but members of either escorted or package tours must make reservations as far ahead as possible. —~ Perhaps the most popular tour of Europe being offered this year is American Express’ 30- to 37-day escorted trip to England, Holland, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, and France. Sailing on either the Queen Elizabeth or Queen Mary from New York on Wednesdays between May 6 and Oct. 7, prices begin at $849; for economy-class planes leaving New York on Sundays during the same period, the price is $920. The above prices include motorcoach, first-class fares on railroads and steamers; sharing a twin-bedroom without bath; three table d’hote meals each day, except in Rome (breakfast and lunch) and Paris and London (breakfast); sight-seeing; transfer of baggage; escort services; taxis; and tips in certain places, Twenty-one of these tours have been scheduled for this coming Summer. Twelve 23-day jet-age holiday trips to London,Paris, the French Riviera, Monaco, Rome, Madrid, Toledo, and Lisbon, tentatively pegged at $866, also are on the agenda. So is a new series of 10 tours of European capitals, some featuring Moscow and the Soviet Union, TWA and the American Export Lines have joined forces to provide air-sea cruises to the Mediterranean.
