Show TAFF TA REPORTS RE P ORIS ON OUR COAL geology of the price river and Hunti huntington canyon deposits cone gone into at length by government expert joseph A taff one of tho the government alc nt geologists on the staff of the united stata go geological logical survey has submitted a report representing hh his findings during his recent examination of tho the minei of the pleasant valley coal regions in carbon coun ty the pleasant valley tiL district strict lies at the tho junction 0 tho the book cliffs and the wasatch plateau in carbon and F nerv couff counties ies extending westward from castle gate and southward from frow scofield through orough the valleys of the vest west fork of tho the price river and Funt huntington ington ryer the main line of the rio grand weater wester railroad crosses crome s the coal bearing lc aring rocks at castle gate and a branch connects the mines in pleasant valley with the main line at colton in the book cliffs proper llah extend eastward from the vici vicinity rity of castle gato and in the eastern edge of the wasatch plateau the geology is simple the rocks lying almost flat and the coal measures being admirably exposed in the eld and for the moat most part bare bam edges edgo of the cliffs ip in pleasant valley however near the north end of tho the wasatch Va satch plateau c au and in the canyon of huntington river immediately V the sou south th the surface feature features are smoother especially in tho the more elevated parts it though deeply cut into canyons and gulches here the edges edge of we coal bearing are cone concealed in a large measure by a cove covering ing of soil and weathered rock vegetal vegetation ion is also more abundant hero here than in the lower and more broken lands the recent investigation vesti gation in this region on which tafts taffs report is based has added muc ip 0 previous knowledge of the coals i v the structure of the rocks with ith which they are coal oal hag has been prospected and mined at three localities in the pleasant valley district these are in pleas ant valley in price river canyon in in the vicinity of castle gate and through and beyond huntington canyon in the vicinity of C castle astle gate particularly extensive prospecting and considerable mining have been done analyses of the coals of this area made at the fuel testing laboratory of the survey on nn samples collected by the geologists show an evenly good grade of fuel moderately low in moisture and ash and remarkably low in delphur k most fost of he coals have a bright luster and withstand long surface exposure ing on their physical and cht chemical mical properties they should be classed as high grade bituminous bitu minoa coals and they form excellent domestic and steaming fuel coking tests have not been made on all these coals but the beds now mined have produced merchantable coke |
