Show S AT THE tabernacle MM there was a fairly good atten attendance danci at the sacrament meeting lit 1 the tab last sunday after afternoon and interesting reports of thair missionary labors were given by elders perry D peters and S norman lee pres L A snow presided over the services which X commenced ommen ced by the choir singing a selection prayer was offered by elder P F r madsen after weicht the choir sang and the sacrament was administered by the he bishopric of 0 the first ward vard during the pas pass ign ot of which elder john K R baird read from the gospel of st john elder peters was the first speaker and he gave an interesting arid and concise report of his labors in the british mission expressed his bis pleasure in the work and bore a strong testimony to the truthfulness of the gospel stated that he was as able to discern between the joy that comes from serving the lord and tho the joy that comes from earthly pleasure lie he had tasted sufficiently of the sweets of tho the spirit to t establish within him a desire tor for the thin things s of god and a desire to continue on in the ministry and do his part in n building bip up the kingdom his expert ances had bad taught him to appreciate his parents and the gospel and what they and it has done for him and he urged the young men to be loyal to the principles of righteousness and walk in paths of truth elder lee occupied the remainder of the time in rehearsing some of the experiences of his mission spoke of his association with pres C W penrose whom lie characterized as a man able and anxious to enter into the feelings and sympathies of the young as well as the old with the result that he was one of the most companionable of men elder lee stated that he be valued the years association with pres penrose very highly tor for the knowledge he had gained from that association stated that he had been given the support and reverence of the elders of the mission to a remarkable degree which be also appreciated and it was those things that impelled him to put forth the very best in him all the time in speaking of the agitation which passed over the mission during his I 1 labors he said that it was the work 0 of a certain minister in liverpool who wrote a series of articles during pres Pen roses incumbency in the presidency of the t he mission but his articles were met with such scathing replies that so completely overwhelmed him that he desisted resisted des isted until after pres penrose had returned home the experience of five months during the crusade was the in most oat exciting the church has ever passed through in the british mission magdline Magd zIne and newspaper articles were published which openly advocated taking the mormons cormons by force and throwing them into the sea As a result of such agitation and attack was made on the mission house late one night the details of which have been related in these columns before in the scrimmage elder leo lee received a nasty cut on his foot which became infected with blood poison and he was forced to keep ills his bed tor for several week during which time reporters from some of the largest papers in the kingdom called upon him and were furnished with correct information regarding the mission of mormonism the result being that sentiment changed completely and column after column of 0 the daily and weekly press was used in a defense of 0 tho the mormons or a repudiation of the methods advanced by the clergy for their extermination the excitement has now passed and the experience has been a valuable one for the church and all its members in great britian the speaker in closing bore a faithful testimony to the truths ot of the gospel and exhorted the saints to faithfully live its principles |
