Wealso salute the Police Officer of the Year. OR 36 YEARS, THE International Association of Chiefs of Police and PARADE have recognized outstanding acts of heroism andservice in law enforcement throughourannual Police Officer of the Year program. In addition,this year we havecreated the Distinguished Service Awardto honorthe bravery, dedication and sacrifice ofall those whotookpart in the rescue and recovery at the World Trade Centerin NewYork City, at the Pentagon and in Somerset County, Pa. This special, onetime awardwill be presentedto representatives ofpolice,firefighters and emergency medical workers in all three jurisdictions. “Their actions demonstrate forcefully how peopleinall lines of public safety unite in a crisis, evenat the sacrifice of their ownlives,” said Bruce D. Glasscock,president of the [ACP andchief of the Police Departmentof Plano,Tex.“Never before on American soil have so many cometogetherat suchrisk at such a critical moment.” In NewYorkCity, 344 fire.personnel were killed. along with 60 Port Authority and New York City police officers, three court officers and agents of the FBI and the Secret Service. Ten different municipalities sent firefighters.
