Show The Salt Lake Tribune CALENDAR Friday, August 10, 2001 ii ¢t an HL 3 E| iis ce 5 z; f iz ceil Bread and Roses ii ‘Bread and Roses’ a Gritty Slice of ImmigrantLife a B4 kk @ Britain's Ken Loach comes to America, but stays trueto his proletarian roots. @ Rated forstronglanguage brief nudity; in English and Spanish with subtitles; 110 minutes. {@ Opening todayat the Tower Theatre. BY SEANP. MEANS THE SALT LAKETRIBUNE for anyone whoeven hints at unionizing. But Shapiro (Adrien Brody, from “The Thin Red Line”), a wild-eyed union organizer, is aiming his radical tactics at Perez’s non-union shop. Sam’s penchant for political street-theater — like crashing alaw firm’s party where the guests include actors Tim Roth and Ron Perlman — embarrasses the building’s tenants and even rankles his union’s leadership. Some of Maya’s co-workers have a lot to lose: h escapes, and Rosa gets her a janito- rial job in the downtown high-rise where she works. To get the job, Maya promises the boss, Mr. Perez (George Lopez), a kickback of herfirst month’s pay. Perez is brutal with his employees, firing one for being a minute late and threatening those who cross him— saving his harshesttreatment Ruben(Alonzo Chavez) needs the moneyto pay a deposit to qualify for a law-school scholarship, while Rosa is caring for her diabetic husband (Jack McGee) without health benefits. erik stunning scene where Rosa tells Maya the lengths she has gone to providefor herlittle sister. Thescript, by Paul Laverty (who wrote Loach’s alcoholic drama “My NameIs Joe”), gets away with a melodramatic touch or two — like a romantic triangle involving Maya, Sam and Ruben — but mainly stays on target depicting the seemingly no-win situation at the bottom These immigrant workers have much in common with the British proletariat characters Loach featured in suchfilms as “RiffRaff” and “Raining Stones.” Same are AMERICAN 2 idealistic, but most are just plain tired — tired of fighting an unfair economic system, tired being paid less for doingmore, tired of being invisible to the powers that be. Mostly, they are tired of the sacrifices, and that weariness comes to a head in a of the economic ladder. If nothing else, “Bread and Roses” should inspire sympathy for — or at least guilt over — those people emptying your office trash. “THE PERFECTFAMILY FILM: ‘Andrews and Hathaway are Kevin Thomas,105 ANGELES TIMES ‘A hip, funny and JIM > NADIA- MICHELLE hairy tale!
