Officials and analysts here remain deeply suspicious of Chen, whom theyearlier denounced as a vile “splittist” who would promote Taiwan’s independence in defianceofBeijing’s insistence that the island and the mainlandconstitute “one China.” But Chen’s carefully crafted and ambiguousspeechlast Saturday may have created enough elbow room for both sides to at least begin talking.
