Show SCARLET FEVER HOW TO AVOID AND PREVENT SCARLET FEVER AND SOME OF THE LEADING TOMS address by board of health this disease is extremely contagious it affects nearly all children one alback usually protecting irom from another though second and even third attacks have been recorded infants in arms usually escape children from two to fifteen forming the majority of cases it Is impossible to give a description of the disease which would fit all cases though a certain general course may be safely looked for the time for breaking out from the time of exposure may be said to be from 3 to 12 days the absolute necessity ot of arriving at a definite conclusion at the earliest possible moment Is perhaps no greater in any ot of the acute contagious diseases with a rash than in scarlet fever and in every instance when there is the slightest doubt the ease case should be suspected from the outset and at least considered as scarlet fever until subsequent developments establish its character beyond question in no disease is the outcome more uncertain than in fever it being impossible to determine in any instance aiom the character of the first symptoms what the ultimate result may be As characteristic character early symptoms we wa have during the first twenty four hours the abrupt onset associated with more or less marked constitutional depression headache intense redness and congestion of the throat sore throat early and persistent no om ill ti ting ng occasionally convulsions pud aud a high fever with a fast pulse this sudden onset when accompanied by head headache ache sore throat and general prostration pio plo is peculiarly suggestive of scarlet fever the early sore throat ot of scarlet fever is almost as constant and characteristic terl te as the rash the rash usually appears from 12 to 36 hours otter ater the first symptoms exceptionally not ill until the third day and last from 3 to 7 gays days its arst appeal ance is almost invariably upon the neck and chest spreading quickly over the neck chest and bo body dy with but slight involvement of the face there is often a peculiar pallor about the mouth in striking contrast with the rest of the face chich is quite a characteristic of the disease the rash appears As characteristic early symptoms as a diffuse scarlet blush which upon closer inspection is seen to be made up of minute punctuated reddened ledd ened spots ts separated by areas of pale skin the weight of af evidence establishes the fact beyond bea ond doubt that scarlet fever is contagious from the appearance ot of the earliest symptoms and until alter after scaling is complete it repeatedly peat edly happens that children n play about apparently perfectly well up to within a few hours of the appearance of the first symptom in con controlling cont roling 6 the spread of tiie tae disease all efforts iki 17 th g tea boa a healt I 1 and cai city y council may beof little littie avail without the intelligent and hearty co operation of the general public hence these few points from the board of health brigham city |
