Clearfield Track Star Thrives on Competition BY MICHAEL YOUNT SPECIAL TO THE TRIBUNE CLEARFIELD — Clearfield High’s Candice Workman has established herself as one of the nation’s elite athletes in the shot put and discus. Maybe what separates heris not her superior strength or technique, but her constantdrive. “She's really a fierce competitor,” said Ray Franklin, who has helped coach Workman for more than a year. “She hates to lose. Don’t let that happy-go-lucky attitudefool you.” Workman has the second-best mark in the nation in the discus (160 feet, 10 inches) and the fifthbest throw in America in the shot put (49-8), but that simply isn’t enough for the Utah State-bound senior. She claims to have struggled with consistencyall year, despite breaking her Utah discus record three times and increasing her shot put record. She has had problems landing the discus in the sector and evenhit the cage a few times last weekend at the Davis Invitational. But Workman is hoping for that one afternoon when everything finally clicks. “Ooh, watch out, that’s gonna be scary. That’s gonna be a good dayand, hello, that will be some nice throws,” Wot said. “Hopefully, it will all come togetheratstate.” Workman still has three weeks until the state meet, held at BYU. Thatalso is the site of the season's last major in-state invitational. Class 1-A and 2-A schools will compete today, while Workman and athletes from 3-A, 4-A and 5-A compete Saturday. The BYU Invitational also features a two-day heptathlon forgirls and decathlon for boys. Workman is not fond of the huge, enveloping discus cage at BYU,but this weekendwill give her a chance to become accustomed toit. “Her mind-set right now is to try and throw it really far, but my coaching says no, you need to concentrate on form and and the distance will come,” said Franklin, who coaches at St. Joseph High in Ogden, but works with several throwers. “When she finally hits the position and gets a souSe, it’s going to be 170-foot plus. Workman, who also has the second-best mark in Utah in the javelin, began throwing in the eighth grade when herfamily relofrom Andrews Air Force when Candice showed promise in the sport, the two set out to learn better technique. “It’s kind of a natural thing for her. It’s always come easy,” Kit Workman said. “Basically, we learned together — it was a fatherdaughter thing.” Workman has improved with diligent training and plenty of weightlifting. “It’s mylife; it’s basivally shot my social life. That’s all I’ve got: school andtrack,” said Workman, who says she lives by Homets at 76ers, Decugis.
