All three compositions (plus an encore) presented by conductor Pavel Kogan, violinist Shlomo Mintz and the Utah Symphonyhad the audience repeatedly on its feet in appreciation. After Mintz sounded the first tones of Paganini’s REVIEW Violin Concerto No.1, it was one coiffeurraising moment after another. His sound projected like an unleashed trumpet, virtuosity overflowing offthe stage. However, Soom MAN ‘ns ©wor wutremccom womument = = ne scmcmmnone = me mz peeNeen sanuer asso a8 teommuct oy on his technique was never taken for granted. His phenomenal finger and bowing acumen held the audience breathless for the concerto’s duration. The first movement was stu pendously wrought, only to be superseded by the cadenza. Mintz out-Paganinied Paganini. Every string player present must have been turning several shades of en. vious: Mintz continued the drama into the central movement. While the preceding movement was replete with musicality, it was here that Mintz’s renderings went straight for the heartstrings. In the finale, he tossed off the difficult double harmonics with flawless facility. In appreciation of the raucous applause, Mintz rewarded the crowd with a spell-binding Caprice No. 1 —also byPaganini. Gynt” Suite and makeit sound like a million dollars. Pungent accenting in the final “In the Hall of the Mountain King” added to the virility of the reading. Then we got Kogan conducting the mighty Symphony No. 5 of Tchaikovsky. As if the first half of the concert weren't enough to send this audience home satisfied to the extreme, Kogan outdid himself again, making this piece his personal property. And with the way he envisioned every nuance and line, why not? Kogan focused on Pavel Kogan the expansive melodies — custom shaping the tempos to best underscore the epitome of emotion. Even the opening chords of the Andarite movementwere as exhilarating as principal hornist Bruce Gifford’s speed in the work’s finale, giving its conductor and audience an impeccable and memorable performance.
