Show The Salt Lake Tribune CALENDAR Friday, October 15, 1999 FS FestivalShowcases Tibet Traditions BY MATT SARTWELL THE SA LAKE TRIBUNE Mandala and Sacred Music in Park City Theancienttraditions of Tibet will be showcased in Park City during a five-day festival featur- ing the building of a Buddhist mandala and the performance of the Drepung monks’ dance and music. “Mystic Arts of Tibet: Sacred Music Sacred Dance”is a way for people to educate and entertain themselves through a unique cul- tural experience, says Vanessa Reichartinger, marketing andde- veloping assistantfor the Summit Institute for the Arts and Humanities, which is co-sponsoring the eventwith the Park City Perform- As part of “Mystic Arts of Tibet: Sacred Music Sacred Dance,” the Drepung Loseling monkswill create a mandala in the main lobby of the Eccles Center, 1750 Kearns Blvd., ParkCity, beginning Tuesday, with its destruction occurring during the final blessing ceremony on Oct. 23 at 9 a.m. The work is free to the public and will be displayed from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. The monkswill perform sacred music and dance at the Harris Fine Arts Center at Brigham Young University, Provo, Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 general, $9 for seniors, $8 for students. Theywill also perform Oct. 22 at 8 p.m. at the Eccles Center in Park City. Tickets range from $50 for the performance and a reception, attended by the monks, after the performance, to $5 for students for just the performance. Phelgye said monks start learning multiphonic singing at an earlyage. “This type of chanting started in the 10th or 11th century. And the dance goes back to the eighth century. The mandala, to be built at Park City’s Eccles Center starting Oct. 19, will be drawn with straight-edged rulers, compasses and white ink on the mandala’s base, or tek-pu, a platform about 2% feet off the ground.
