The Bulldogs’ 1998-99 season, which begins tonight at Southern Utah University against Cedar City should be considerably less rocky. Dan Hill had also been contemplating retirement, becausehis wife has multiple sclerosis. Danny Jorgensen and T.J. Peterson round out the starting five for Gunnison, which went 19-6last year and placed fifth. The New 2-A Last spring, a new realignmentplan for 2-A basketball was approved. Schools will be grouped into fourdivisions, instead of the traditional three regions. Divisions will combineat the end of the season for region tournawith the top four finishers chdivision qualifying for region, and thetop four finishers from each region qualifying forstate. This year, the South Division will join the Central Division for a region tourney andthe EastDivision will join the North. They will rotate next year. Here's a look at thedivision races in 2-A boys basketball, with predicted order offinish: : Grantsville. 2, South Summit. 3, North Summit. 4, RowlandHall. St. Josep! Can Grantsville defend its title in coach Jeff Hamm's last year? He says yes, with starters Kelly Mondragon and Alan Mouritsen with 6-5 Joel Bui center inthe statelast year. The Cowboys should win the north division easily, before probably running into San Juan in the North-Rast region tournamenttitle game. NewSouth Summit coach Charles Mohlerreplaces Craig Rydalch, but expects a slowstart becauseseveral of his top players were injured in the state championship football game. North Summit coach Todd Nield says he is rebuilding. Rowland Hall's top two returners are juniors, Chris Hill and David Sandberg, but coach John Windhamis optimistic because his team is intelligent and works hard FormerFresnoStateplayer Chris Koford is St. Joseph’s new coz East Division: 1, San Juan. 2 Grand. 3, Duchesne. 4, Monticello. 5. Altamont Before rolling throughthis division, San Juanwill play a killer non-region schedule that could include teams suchas Baltimore's Dunbar High and Provo at a tourney in Farmington, N.M. Atleast the Broncos havetheir best team in years, led by all-region players Sheldon Spotted Elk, Ronnie Nieves and France Nielson. Jason Arthurleads Grand’s aboveaveragefrontcourt, while Monticello hopesits size, most notably 6-7 Tyler Forrest, makesupfor a lack of depth. Duchesne's top players are underclassmen. Cris Hoopes, a 6-3 sophomore, looksto be a future 2-A star. Central Division: 1, Gunnison. 2, North Sevier. 3, Manti. 4, Juab. 5, SouthSevier. Thisshould be the toughest 2-A division byfar, since any of the five teams could find themselves in the rankings this year. North Sevier has the frontcourtto challenge Gunnison, but needs guards Hunter Shaheen, Blake Heath and Seth Hallows to come along quickly. Manti coach Mark Hugentobler says this could be thebest team he has coached. Strong words, since he won the 1994title at Monticello. The Templars have great balance butno standouts. Juab lost everyone to graduation after placing second last year, but the and depth and competed well in summer tournaments. South Sevier lost star forward Brett Wallace, who moved to Bountiful, but football all-stater Sean Hessey, a provenscorer,is back South Division: 1, Kanab. 2 Millard. 3, Beaver. 4, Enterprise. 5, Parowan. A big battle is brewing between Kanab and Millard for this division’s top spot. Kanabis simply loaded, with two-time all-stater Jerron Glazier. Matt McFadden and Chad Sturgill someofits stars. But Millard has athletes, too, andwill be led by 6-3 Mike Turner, one of 2-A’s top scorerslast year. Beaverwill rely on tough defense, says coach Cal Albrecht, until some untested players get better. Lynn Daltonwill anchora frontline that boasts some good leapers. Enterprise pushed North Sevierin its opener and has strong guards: Reuben Evans, John Nelson are three-year starters. However, the Wolves maynot have a starter taller than 6-feet in many games. Parowanreturns all five starters, butwill have to work toward gaining some respect after having been pickedlast TH SOCIATED PRESS MINNEAPOLIS — Paul Molitorrefused to use the word retirement, but all indications are his 21-year career is over. The Minnesota Twins star said Thursday he has decided to end his playing career. “My heart tells me I'm done, he said at a news conference. In the next breath, Molitor said he wants to look at other opportunities and refusedto call his announcement a retirement. But Molitor, 42, said he will not ac ceptoffers from the Milwaukee Brewers or Toronto Blue Jays. ‘The Brewers had beentalking to Molitor, eighth on the careerhit list, about a front-office job. Molitor said earlier this month he had been con tacted by several teams. GOMEZ BACK WITH PADRES Shortstop Chris Gomez and the San Diego Padres agreed on a $7.8 mil. lion, three-yearcontract.
