delivered by jacob coleman editor of the juab county times mr president ident inen members ibers and friends of the utah press association I 1 am asked to toll tell in 10 minutes the resources of the state of utah why mr president it would take more than ton ten minutes to enumerate the different products that can be raised on one of 0 our city lots where I 1 live at nepha and as for the states resources it would require a book as large as an ail unabridged dictionary to list tile the thousands of baths products that go to satisfy almost every human need ours is a magnificent state it Is an inland empire within whose boundaries of 0 nearly square miles sixty seven states like rhode island or two chios and one deleware cou could d be more than comfortably fitted in n and would not cover its vast area D behold e its majestic mountains whose snow crowns rival in grandeur pikes peak of 0 colorado or the alps of switzerland nowhere in the world except the innermost recesses 0 of russia can such beautiful coloring of mountain foliage be found as during the autumn days in our canyons and dells where on the globe except in utah can call a lake be found where the bather can dreamily float on such buoyant waters while attending atte school v we e studied of the wonderful natural bridge in historic virginia but our state can show the virginian faur such bridges with which his would of thousands of population to help tickle our soil that it may laugh bounteous harvests we need capitalists to establish a glass factory to use our silica sand which is 90 per cent pure cereal plants and starch factories to consume our grain and potatoes woolen mills to manufacture the twenty million pounds of wool annually produced plants to handle our mountains of sulphur potteries for ur clay deposits and so on and so on and the only way to get these wings is to advertise in this day and age the merchant who has a store full ot of good bargains and never tells the people about them never advertises is soon relegated rela gated in the hands ot of a receiver just so with cities and tates states it if they do not in some way attract capital and men they will rapidly decay and will be lost in this present day race ol of keen competition between communities which are bidding for the home builders and captains of industry the the progress of a community as ot of a person consists in looking for opportunities with which to make a still greater progress thanks to the last legislature a bill was passed which allows clues cities and counties to appropriate money for advertising ver and publicity purposes the people ot of every community should take advantage of this and should aid the development league first to advertise the resources of the state tar far and wide to create the inquiry and second to send the in inquirer booklets and literature explaining truthfully and accurately the advantages the different districts ot of the state have to offer the prospective home right here too is where the local newspaper may be a power for good it is surprising the way the home paper is mailed to d distant friends and hundreds of people have thus been induced to settle in the different towns of our state A community la Is largely judged by the up to date dat ess and enterprise of I 1 13 newspapers it reflects the prag essl essi veness of the locality is represents the editor should never an opportunity to sing the pra praises ics acs of his town and exploit its resources not only should this be done for the effect that it may have on the possible nonresident non resident reader but for tile the education of hi his homo home readers your community may be rich in resources and yet no matter low much outside advertising it gets gels it if the home people are unappreciative cia cla tive indifferent and ignorant ol of the tha possibilities ol of their district it will have a tendency to discourage the new settler who has come to this state and frighten away the prospective one let us its then as members of 0 the utah press association realize that the future development of this state is more or loss less in ill our hands that a comm community unit Y is judged largely by the paper that it Is tor for us to lead the people of 0 the towns we represent to a discovery of the hidden treasures that lie in the mountains and valleys of our prolific state we must forever decry indifference and pessimism and exalt local patrIo patriotism and optimism let this be ever our unfailing duty as we labor hand band in hand with the development league for the up
