Thefour high school chums do not feel pressure to succeed, This is their first band and they are willing to learn on the job. Jayson Gates, Josh Crowther, Jake McCandless and Maurice Hille have just released their second album, “Cryptogamy Kills Cowboy,” and have ventured for thefirst time outside of Salt Lake for a series of concerts, They also havetheir sights fixed on touring the Northwest, Elbo Finn performs tonight at LiquidJoes, ‘We were friends before we played in a band andtaught ourselves," said Crowther, a 23-yearold guitarist, “If this band doesn't work,we won't have a musical ca. THURSDAY Elbo Finn has just released “CryptogamyKills Cowboy.” reer,” Elbo Finn —a nonsensical moniker playfully conceived one night whenthe band was searching for a name — servesupa strong dish of melodie pop and rock, They also like to experiment with different instruments and genres, In 1995, the band released a five-aoe recording, ope and the Wheel.” A s ri er Hash,” earned a Eotation on Salt Lake City radio, Since then, Elbo Finn has built a solid core audience and enough money to produce “Cryptogamy.”” Thedifference between the two albums, say the band members, is experience. “We were virgins on the first Sketch heme Conor rock; Desa Goat Saloon, 165 8, West Temple, pm Sharon 0’ "Bien seo Gepetio's, aya£, 4670 9p. oustie; epelta's, 230 8. 1300 wataon Earth Jass Bocack; Aabary Pub, 22 B, 100 South; 9 p. at Thompson Doi contemporary; Dimi, 6121 8, Higsland Deve: 9 pm t; Jaz; D.B. Not only does the recording sound more polished than the first, but it shows maturity. “We tried to simulate our live show,” said Crowther, “But it is a lot more precise than our live show.” Fronting the band is 22-year. old vocalist Jayson Gates, origi nally from Pittsburgh. His strong baritone continues to improve. But band members realize they still have somegrowing to do, And that will come from touring out side of Utah. “Wefeel confined by just play: ing in Salt Lake,” said Gates, “That is why we wantto get out Wewant to experience more and expose our musicto others “We want to build a profession al imag “We want to break the Utah syndromeof being on the verge [of success] and then breaking chargeof the recording process, “We were nervous,’’ said Crowther. Elbo Finn went back to work earning money to make the next album. Two yearslater, the band produced and recorded ‘Crypto- some gamy,” which “We'relike family,” said Hille. cost more than ,” said Crowther. “It happe all the|time. Look at the number of bands that have done that — My Sister Jane, The Obvious, Sweet Loretta.” Whatever happens, the four plan to do it together. @ At Liquid Joes Station, 8925 8. 255 West; 9 p.m South; 8 p.m. MONDAY Harry Lee and Back Alley; Elbo Finn Has Canyon Inn, 3700 E. 7000 Skoldats, My Man Friday, Dave's Big Deluxe;Ska; DV8,115 S, West Temple; 8 pan.
