| Show I M' The Salt Lake Tribune Saturday Dx'ember 21 1963 4£ j XT' New gondola heads for the hills : The Newest — And the Best Park City Skiers Set to Go WB this is sure some area for the recreat- ion skier” ‘‘They’ve sure got a lot of trails and slopes here” “Isn’t this gondola nice You don’t get cold going up the mountain” “It’s so easy to rea’fch And isn’t all this parking space nice” Those are just a sampling of comments from n skiers who have visited the plush dollar ski complex going up at Park City since the gondola lift began limited operations last Thursday Many Features Each of the comments points out one of the feature attractions of the resort which will have its grand opening Saturday at 9 am e resort owned and operated by The 10 United Park City Mines Co has some 18 miles of ski slope and trails These runs range from about “Shaft" run which is almost the as steep as It sounds to the gentle slopes of the beginners’ area near the Center In between there are intermediate novice and expert slopes and trails that cut through snow-lace- d evergreens and lanky aspen trees stripped of their leafy cover Some of the runs take the adventurous skier past rustic history-fillemining shacks over mine dumps and dow'h trails that once were the main access routes for the millions of dollars in minerals that were taken from the mountains Snow Depth Vary And the snow conditions vary with powder at the top slopes for those who like to float over virgin snows and plenty of packed runs for the multi-millio- 000-acr- oft-talk- ‘ d slatsters Of course to reach all these slopes and trails several uphill facilities are necessary and Park City has these too Foremost among the lifts is the long Treasure Mountains Tramway longest facility of this type in the United States The gondola now has some 40 cabins By the end of the winter 92 cabins will be riding the cables and by next winter some 145 cabins will be in use Up to 9300 Feet sec'The tramway with its two tions takes the skier or tourist atop Pioneer Ridge some 9300 feet above Park City The Summit House restaurant-cafeteri- a greets skiers at the top along with an unmatched panoramic view of distant valleys and mountains A skier can go all the way to the top or get off at the at the famous Silver King Coalition Mine and ski down double-chai-r g lift In addition a services some 5 miles of trail at the resort Called the Prospector this facility has an hourly capacity of 900 skiers and starts near the spot where the upper section of the gondola ends More Facilities And a pair of tows boost the area’s uphill n and facilities One tow begins near the takes skiers atopa hill which guards one of the new wide runs to the base of the complex The other tow is at the base of the hill near the Center and will be used for beginners A ski school a certified ski patrol ski rental cenand repair shop beginners slope a day-car- e ter for youngsters and a 1000 car parking lot are among the other facilities which cater to the skiers ‘ mid-statio- n fast-runnin- year-aroun- mid-statio- at the resort - f 11 ! h ' j d |
