Show 6 H lie he came heralded as the greatest interpreter ot of literature and the greatest dramatic reader in america today after listening to his splendid reading of victor hugos masterpiece le les s the vast audience which packed the opera house yesterday afternoon ter noon was unanimous in bearing witness that the press notices had not been overstated prof clark was scheduled to read hawthorner Haw scarlet letter but atter after seeing that the audience was composed of chiefly young people he stated that hugos great novel would bs be more suitable and interesting and when prof merrill made tho the announcement it was greeted with applause with a strong baritone voice that could easily be modulated to read feminine lines prof dark clark went at his task with a zest that infused those who listened and as he be got well along in his story the attention was intense and his auditors hung on every word he uttered not a single picture of that great story was misinterpreted and not a single character was mistaken even though names were not mentioned so perfect wits was the delineation it was wonderful and a feast the likes of which has never before been enjoyed in this community there was only one bad feature about the reading and that was tho light ligh t early in the forenoon the power had to be turned off to permit of making some repairs on the water wheel and they were not finished until after prof clark got through the audience sat in darkness but the reader L r had bad three lamps at his left elbow which gave him light but only partially illuminated his coun tence so tho the expressions of his face had to be felt more than seen certainly great credit and commendation Is due prof merrill and the high school faculty forgetting tor fr getting prof clark to come to Drig brigham ham and it is to be hoped he will come again |
