We shall not forget the wonderful “sounds” of the This enaemble’s two Utah appearancs Orchestra Philadelphia wrote an lmpreaslve postcript to an eventful season here Eugene Ormandy personable and diminutive (in physical “belit-tlers- ” appearance only) conductor of the orchestra has his like anyone else in the public eye And peihaps he is not a great conductor of the order of Toscanini or Walter or similar names from past generations Yet no one can deny his gieat-nes- t with respect to his building and maintaining the Philadelphia at its consistently high level during the past decades This is moie than most of the BIG ouhestias can say Most have their crises their ups and downs their periodic of both conductor and personnel But at Philadelphia Ormandy has had things well under eontrol during his tenura of ths past two decades and is still a comparatively young man with the prospects of another two decade at the Philadelphia's helm Solves Seating Pisa The Philadelphia’s seating arrangement In the Tabernacle has been the subject of Interesting discussion among aeveral Utah Symphony personneL One of the difficulties of orchestral performers In the Tabernacle is In being able to hear one another and gain coordination of ensemble The distance of brass from percussion particularly tympanl In our own orchestra has been the subject of some controversry In this simplicity of the solitaires is duplicated in the nuptial bands each restrained ” In dsoorttive moiK M339 11130 til CI1J0 a tit F Ilf 4 $271 h $it reg’ard This particular problem If such It be was solved by Tabernacle seating plan: brasses were directly behind woodwinds tympanist was on the Immediate left of brasses while the horn section occupied the position where our brasses normally sit Another Interesting feature of the Philadelphia was the extreme youth of many of Its members even among principals The concertmaster for example is only 32 (the father of seven children as well) and the principal cellist Is still In ‘his twenties " Provo 8L Concerts There were significant differences between the Salt Lake the BYU audience naturand Provo concerts Program-wisally had their choice and perhaps received the favored music Performance-wishowever the difference In the sound of the orchestra In the Tabernacle $s opposed to that In the BYU field house was tremendous So much of the sound In the latter was lost to the hearers In addition there were the unavoidable “noises" of the heating plant and the problem of seating latecomers Of course the storm in Provo was a factor but It wasn’t until the beginning of the third movement of the Brahms (which had been preceded by Oberon Overture) that the crowd was really settled Then too there was the minor annoyance of applause between movements of the Brahms until Ormandy cleverly prevented It between final two movements Although Ormandy admitted having “any number of encores available he used only Bach transcriptions He has made some excellent arrangements of Bach works himself but explains that he never conducts his own transcriptions ir W' G H e Prices Include Federal ten e Charge or budget illutttnien ththt Ip enargrd O f
