Brass Signs Saving Money Brass is a steal for cost savings and durability. University of Utah officials say about the conversion of painted steel signs to laminated brass. The university has begun a three-yea- r project to revamp the campus signs and graphics system. . Directional and street signs and building identification will be converted. The shiny new signs may be hard to read. "But after a few months of weathering, they'll begin to take on a beautiful deep brown color, so the white lettering will stand out, said Lewis Penman, managing architect in U. of U. Facilities, Planning and Construction. The brass signs are made in the facilities planning office by Larry Calkins. He uses a machine to cut letters out of brass panels, then lajninates the panels to others coated with white reflective material. Smaller versions of the outdoor signs can be ordered for office doors. The brass plates cost more than plastic, but are more durable.
