Couples wishing to deepen their relationship with the Lord and experience that return to Christ can have the opportunity during a Retomo Retreat weekend. Sponsored by the Catholic Church, Retomo is open to couples of any Christian denomination who would like to spend a quiet, relaxed weekend studying scriptures and praying. Retomo is conducted by two priests and two lay couples. The weekend retreat begins with a Bible on the floor in a candle-li- t room and the entire weekend is structured around that, according to Bill and Eileen Robertson, one of the team couples. Hear Gods Word The Rev. William Mobley explained couples experiencing Retomo are there because they have a desire to hear the word of God and integrate that word more deeply into their lives. Through scriptures, Father Mobley explained, the couple leams how important they are, how unique they each are and how the Father loves them. The team shares personal reflection of the F aiher with the groups. The couple, each with scriptures to reflect on, go their separate ways and later come back together to discuss and pray about their individual experiences. Same Scripture Individuals find when they go back together as a couple they rarely have reflected on the same scripture, Father Mobley said. Often, however after discussing what the scriptures mean, the couple decide God is calling them as a couple to serve Him in some way, Father Mobley said. .The same process is repeated twice mdre, one time with the couple studying scriptures of Jesus' love and once with the couple studying the Holy Spirit's love. The couple then joins with the other couples to share, If they wish, what they have learned. When asked if the same type process would work with individuals, Father It has to be on an Mobley said, individual basis first. n Before the couple experienced Retor-nthere was a certain competition between them in their spiritual life, Mrs. Robertson said. Through Retomo, the couple was able to blend their unique insights into their faith and in turn, each has grown, they agree. o, Once your faith Is verbalized it becomes much more real," Mr. Robertson said. The couples heard of a new movement in Madrid, theCursillo, and urged the priest to help them participate in such an activity. He did and sent five of his students to Madrid to share the experience. The students returned to share with the couples that experience and the couples discovered an alive prayer in their lives which they took back to their families. Over the next few years Father Calvo developed a methodology. Through the years it developed into what is now Marriage Encounter. However, many couples were not picking up the spiritual dimension of the encounter and in 1969 Father Calvo altered the outline slightly and came up with what is the Retomo Manual. Active Two Years It has been active for two years in ' Utah, but not many people have heard about it. Those who have, have spread the wopd. however, and in two years over 109 tuples have gone through the Retomo experience,, Mrs. Robertson said. Because the experience is so personal, a couple is not supposed to get anything specific from the program. However, the Robertsons emphasize the unstructured program does bring couples closer togef v, back to their roots with God ancLieir future with him." Father Mobley explained that princi- - pling or rooting oneself with Jesus is what is lacking for many couples in todays society. He sees a gradual diminishing of the spiritual part of humans, that which makes humans unique. Retomo helps couples root themselves in the word of the Lord and better able to stand up under the pressures of todays world, Father Mobley said. However, the Robertsons agree the process spiritually is easier together. As we have chosen matrimony in our everday life, in our spiritual life it is easier because we live together, Mrs. Robertson said. So the closeness and spirituality the . couple has built during the weekend doesnt diminish and they are encouraged to pray together daily. Mr! Robertson explained working together on scripture passages has helped them support each others faith in the Lord and has given them the. opportunity to grow. Under the direction of the Robertsons, Father Mobley, Joe and Marion Miller and the Rev. Joe Baranicwiez, Retomo is held at our Lady of the Mountain Retreat House, 1749 Lake St. in Ogden. Anotl, ,t Retomo will be held Friday through Sunday. There are still openings available. For further information, contact the retreat house. But he adds: Movies censor out this reflection of real life more often than not. The letter assails the sudden emergence of aggressive religious partisanship in the political arena, but at the same time the letter warns that political apathy is faithless Church Sets Annual Fund Drive Wasatcft Hills, Salt Lake Central and Salt Lake Spanish day Adventist churches will begin their Oth annual Ingathering Appeal in Salt Lake County this week.
