Show The Salt Lake Tribune, Sunday, October Pedestal One of the best parts of sewing is the finishing and you know why. Finishing is the next step to wearing There are several ways to finish hems the quick knit, stretch and stitch way. One way, super quick finish for and sleeves, is called the Sport Hem It is frankly machine stitched, handled a little 8 8 1 differently from an ordinary machine stitched hem or a straight and can be done with either a stitch. If you have a choice of stitches, we suggest you try a sample of each to see which you prefer. Another way is the simulated cuff hem. It is also super quick and a great finish for the bottom of shirts you plan to wear out (not tucked sleeves, in) and it is especially good for the bottom of pants. When it is finished, it looks absolutely like a cuff. We will tell you how to do both. The same general rules apply for hems as for other quick knit stitching equip your machine with e ball point needle, set for a or straight stitch 10 to 12 per inch and, of wide course, stretch as you stitch. Dont stitch over pins. TTie sport hem: Allow a (2cm) turn up for bottoms and 2 inches (5cm) for sleeves and zig-za- g dresses, minimum. Turn the hem to inside and pin (Fig 1). Turn the double layer to outside so hem is in position shown in (Fig. 2) and pin. You will have three layers of fabric together and the raw hem edge will be along the second fold line. With raw edge of hem uppermost, under foot of or straight stitch along edge. machine, : zig-za- g By Joe Graedon For the last 20 years Americans have been fighting that dastardly demon Mr. Cholesterol to prevent clogged arteries and head off heart attacks. The food and nutrition board of the National Academy of Sciences recently declared a truce against dietary cholesterol. These experts concluded that there is little if any evidence that lowering blood cholesterol in healthy individuals will prevent heart attacks or help people live longer. Sounds Heretical Such a statement coming from a group of scienestablishment tists sounds heretical. But the controversy over cholesterol has been cooking for many years. The restrictive diets that have been recom the few tests which have been done do not prove they prolong life. In fact, some of the ol substitutes seem to offer little benefit and many pose risks of their own. Margarine Issue Take the margarine versus butter issue. In order to make vegetable oil tasty and spreadable it has to be hydrogenated, or saturated with hydrogen. Then artificial flavors and colors are added. This process eliminates much of the value of vegetable oil and may make margarine more dangerous than butter when heated. Other research indicates that a large intake of polyunsaturated oils may increase the incidence of cancer in experimental animals.
