Show i 0H The Salt Lake Tribune. Saturday. July Provo 2ti, 19X0 Whats July z4tii with Kottke and McEuen fashion with a blazing Machine Gun on As he reached for his the for the second number, somebody yelled out Pamela Brown." Without g down and saying a word, he put back up, for a beautiful picked rendition of the Tom T. Hall classic. Terry Orme By Tribune Staff Writer It was more a party than SNOWBIRD a concert the July 24th holiday spent imbibing in the mountain air, and guitarist extraordinaire Leo Kottke seeming to feel no pain either. You could hardly call Kottkes performance flawless. At times it was aweinspiring, but the clinkers fell left and right, and with each Kottke grimaced a little But no matter, the crowd was having one hell of a good time. Things got started in typical Kottke Happening Today Kottke has the gift to weave enchanting music with just a guitar. He has no problem filling a concert hall with beautiful sounds with a single instrument. Thursday night, outdoors on the plaza, he was only partially successful. John McEuen opened the show trading off on fiddle, banjo, and guitar. The member of the Dirt Band performed fine versions of such traditional numbers as "Old Joe Clark, and Merle Travis I Am a Pilgrim. McEuens performance was as much comedy as music as he delivered line after line borrowed from Steve Martin. six-stri- Unlike his many past concerts in the Salt Lake area, Kottke concentrated more on improvisation and stayed away from the standards. While a brilliant improviser, an hour or so of the music tends to become repetitive. A Louise" or some other ballad thrown in would have broken up the monotony.
