David Grisman and Go. at the Bird Ry Torry Orm Tribune Staff Writer SNOWBIRD String music flowed from the streams which pavilion here Sunday like the snow-fewere cascading down the sides of Little Cottonwood Canyon. David Grisman, mnndohnist extraordinaire, brought his Quintet '80 to this alpine resort for an afternoon of what he calls dawg music." As always, Grisman surrounded himself with outstanding musicians. Mark O'Conner, fresh from Weiser, Idaho, where he was named National Old Time Fiddle Champion, and from Nashville, Tenn., where he took top honors in the Grand Masters Fiddle Championship, performed his magic on three instruments: guitar, fiddle, and mandolin. NO ANGELS0 s rilmnr out the concert, took a turn playing rhythm mandolin, and showed why he is the grand master of the fiddle on a round of three dance tunes. Mike Marshall, the Florida State Fiddle Champion of a few years back, played rhythm mandolin snd traded breathtaking licks with Grisman on the, opener Dawg's Bull" and later In the concert on Dawgology. Marshall, too, plays many instruan ments. On one number he picked a oversized mandolin with a deeper tone. Marshall and fiddler Darol Anger combined for a blazing fiddle duet on Angers composition Fiddlesticks. Of Mm The highlight of this concert was Grismans interpretation of the classic John Coltrane ballad, Naima." The song was a retreat from the blistering, rapid-fir- e string music that made up most of the concert. Here Grisman's playing was understated and tender. The only problem was that the crowd could have been more quiet. Bassist Rob Wasserman also took a turn in the solo Punk spotlight, playing his own composition Sizzle. James Scott, a familiar face on the local music scene, previewed songs from his first album, due for release in the fall. The guitarists satirical songs of life in Salt Lake City hit dose to home and both he and bassist Eugene Jablonski performed beautiful instrumentals that were a perfect introduction to the music cf David Criaman and company. rc N by Qt lender ti 12:45 Un rotad Adult Only barton wnda t no od'ttd hrtwe Itotor wad by Motion Future Canned horror film.
