Show BOX CAR ROBBERY last Thurs thursday cipy night or rather early friday morning thieves broke into a box car on the siding in the depot yards and carried oft off a quantity 0 of merchandise for stores in corinne bear river city promontory and kelton both seals were broken but had been resealed in a clumsy fashion which led to the detection of the robbery when the officers were notified friday fr morning they made a search ot of the yards and marshal evans stumbled right onto the cache of goods in the gully north of the stock yards where goods were piled in a big heap there was also a big dry goods box filled with paper and empty pasteboard boxes the contents of which had been carried ott off by the thieves among the articles found in the each cache were three cases of chewing tobacco ba co caps shoes corduroy trousers trow sors sers underwear blankets etc A new cap was discovered near the car early in n the morning by night operator gillespie as he went down to check oft off the car which had arrived during the night there was blood also on the article as well as on the side of the car showing that lingers fingers had been cut in getting the door open the officers did not disturb what they found but kept a watch on it t during the day and when evening came marshal evans sheriff josephson and deputy jensen donned fur overcoats and concealed themselves near the place so that they had the spot under surveillance all the night through expecting the parties it if they were local residents to come for the balance of their haul baul the night vigil ended with nothing so far as the officers were concerned tor for none came after the goods special officer Jo eJones came up next day got out a search warrant and made some investigations which developed nothing the theory of the officers is that the parties might have been tramps and cached away what they could not carry in the hope that taft officer soul d and alth ing them off the trail as the cache would infer that some one living in this immediate vicinity was vas guilty tf the theft was committed by local parties then they must have got wind of the watch the officers were keeping and refused to go after the balance of the goods the articles recovered are now in the possession of the railroad company and a vigorous search is being made to apprehend the guilty ones the goods in the car were scattered boxes were ripped open and things generally revealed a disorderly condition |
