Show MILLARD COUNTY IRRIGATORS. IRRIGA-TORS. The Melville Irrigation ditch Is ' ncv carrying joy to thousands of Millard County settlers, through the waters that flow its channels. The following most interesting communication communi-cation on the opening of this great irrigating ir-rigating enterprise is at our disposal, and we print it for the fund of valuable valu-able information it contains, unexag- crated even in the imagination -f the writer: "Burtncr, Millard Co., Utah, August 17, 1908. Mr. J. H. Burtncr, Freight and Passenger Pas-senger Agent, S. P., L. A. & S. L. R. R. Co.', Salt Lake City, Utah My dear Mr. Burtncr: One week ago today the water was turned into the canal of the Melville Irrigation Company about noon. A portion of this main canal is the old river bed cast of the San Pedro track, and with the comparatively small stream that was put into this canal in the beginning begin-ning of the two pieces of old river channel used were not filled with water until Friday night, Aug. 14th. The capacity of this main canal is about 223 cubic feet of water per second. The canal is 24 feet wide on the bottom, has a fall of one foot to the mile, and can carry water six feet deep. As I stood on the banks of this .canal and saw this stream of water moving slowly toward some seventy thousand acres of barren desert land that will pay 20 percent on a cost of $100.00 per acre above the expense ol raising and reaping the crop if alfalfa is raised thereon. I saw in my imagination imag-ination thousandb of teams, plowing, planting, sowing, reaping, and all these acres redeemed and made productive. pro-ductive. In the midst of this wealth of redeemed land, in fact near its center, in my imagination I saw spring up where the town of Burtncr has been located and named in your honor, hon-or, a great and prosperous city, a commonwealth rivaling, if not actually actual-ly outdoing our Salt Lake City. Such an enormous stream of water cannot be turned out upon this western west-ern desert land without making a marvelous transformation. The Burtncr Real Estate and Investment In-vestment Company was organized at Burtncr the nth day of August this year, with your humble servant as President, Ni. S. Bishop as Secretary and Treasurer, Fratnk L. Copcning as Manager and F. R. Lyman as Vice-President. Vice-President. This is, I think, the first company to incorporate in the town of Burtncr. We have already farming farm-ing land and city lots on the market . of all kinds that arc good and at the best pi-ices. RICHARD R. LYMAN". |
