ILI liberal beral 11 organ in addition to other comments too gross and abusive to re reproduce p produce in the DESERET NEWS says sayf the deponent stated he did not know who this party was who interfered but be was a tall spare man with strong features and a medium k sa s chestnut board beard apostle grant most likely in reply to the foregoing we have been furnished with these counter affidavits TERRITORY OF UTAH county of salt lake J david james being first duly sworn deposes and says several days da 8 ago a man who said he be came from ephraim ephraim san borto sanpete ite county applied to me for work I 1 had no vacancy for him and told him so applications of a similar kind are made to me daily I 1 said nothing to him or to any one else about headquarters but did say that is all I 1 know in reference to the matter mentioned in the salt lake tribune of october DAVID JAM JAMES Es sworn to and subscribed before me a notary public in and for salt lake county territory of utah this dakof day of october AD A D 1889 JAMES H MOYLE TERRITORY OF UTAH county of salt lake charles W penrose being first duly sworn sword deposes and says I 1 have read a purported affidavit published in the salt lake tribune of october the facts in regard matter as far as I 1 am acquainted with them are as follows A man came to me several days ago and said he wanted work and that he had applied to david james who told him to come to me I 1 0 expressed my surprise and told him I 1 had no authority over david james that I 1 was not a member of the cit city council and had nothing to do with any punic public work after some further conversation in which I 1 learned that mr james was very busy when the application was made I 1 suggested that he had probably sent the man to the office coto to get rid of him just afo before e he be left mr 1 D D houtz called at my office and spoke to me for a fe few moments in the doorway he is net nei ther tall all nor spare neither has be a chestnut my conversation with tile the man was previous to the arrival of mr houtz I 1 have learned that the man who applied to me has been in jail fail and therefore I 1 am not surprised at any bek A D 1889 JAMES JAMBS H the liberal 1 organ has added the remarks given above for the purpose of making it appear that the churchin church in some way yet unexplained is engaged in colonizing and th therefore it I 1 infers U fera th that at the vi visitor actor to this office described as tall and ll spare spareY and with a beard was apostle heber J grant there is not tho the slightest resemblance between mr houtz and mr grant and the last named hamed gentleman was not in this office at the time when the alleged maker of the false affidavit wan vas here and ww now let us look for a moment at the logli of the liberal liberala Libe ralf organ A apan an from sanpete asked the editor of this paper to th get him work on the sewers which the editor was unable to do ergo I 1 the editor of the NEWS is at the head of a colonization scheme A caller at this office who is of medium bight square squeare build and dark hair and complexion plex pl exion ionis is described by the organ as tall spare and with a chestnut beardin beardi n order to make it appear t that hat it was apostle grant and ergo the church is engaged ina in a colonizing ng scheme sch jeme that is about the usual style of reasoning ning with which the liberal organ jumps at its conclusions we here an announce nou nee that we have no strings krings upon mr james nor any one else engaged in public work a but that whenever and wherever we can learn of openings for men out of work to obtain employment we shall take pains from this time forward to point them out we have bave just as good a right to do this as the abusive and alid scurrilous scribes of the tribune have and if we desired to retaliate in their own fashion we could furnish tile the public with some information that would throw light upon several dark transactions we can afford to wait |
