Show LAWS OF MAN NOT FINAL A very observing and talented woman well up in the world of thought and literature who has been visiting a portion of the past winter in salt lake city where she has been observing the mormons cormons and gentiles and enquiring into the merits of the so called mormon religion and the believers therein has written to us a letter showing that the people of the united states have been guilty of great injustice to the patient honest deserving pioneers of utah in refusing to ad mit utah as a state she wonders why the laws of the country should be so partial and why those who are honest faithful workers and believers in virtue morality sobriety and integrity of life should be so warred against by those who administer that which may be called the political power of the country the refusal to admit utah as a state reflects no credit u upon pan lany any of those in congress who thus level the hostility of the general government against a people who as a whole are far more deserving than are those who hold against them the prejudice born of ignorance in no portion of this country is there to be found a better home element a more honest and trustworthy temperance element a more laudable ambitious pioneering labor endur lug ing and wealth prod producing acl ng element than is found among the mormon pioneers and beautifiers of utah and the surrounding territories it is safe to say that not one person out of every one hundred human beings in the united states outside of that which is k known own as the mormon church can tell why the latter day saints people are called mormons cormons or why their bible is thus named it is a positive fact provable by official records th that t there is more er crime I 1 me dru drunken ena prostitution degradation and all that which Is degrading and crime producing in new england new york wisconsin and other ot the older states la in proportion to population than there is lia ia utah territory in the east it is a notorious fact that the marriage obligation is not dot considered so binding as among the mormons cormons Mor mons that there are more saloons jails prisons and workhouses ln in proportion to the population among the people of the states than in utah that the ratio of education is higher in utah than it is in massachusetts so long the boast of the american people as the location of that which is said to be religion education refinement and progress in the arts and sciences not a day passes in the city of new york that some one or more of the residents of tae city are not unearthed in their bigamous relationship so that it is safe to say that in the state of new york there are more bigamists biga mists than there are polygamists among the mormon people it is also a fact that not two per cent of the male members of the mormon church in utah and adjacent territories were ever mists or adopters of the plural wife system while it is safe to say that more than twenty per cent of the population in new england are entirely unmindful of their marriage vows and contracts and that the majority of the church members in all of the states with the exception of iowa and kansas are to a less or greater extent intemperate and in favor of licensing and carrying on the work of making drunkards and paupers haupers pau pers happily is it for the world that the laws of men mea are not final the time is coming when not one per cent of the laws made here on earth by man through his agents for legis lation will be recognized as aa of any amount account in the great future which is before us ua all the time will come when mans laws will melt and vanish as does ice under the heat of the summers sun when thousands of the laws of mais will virtually flee to the mountains praying that men will forget them the time is coming to all of us when manhood and womanhood based upon and growing into correct principles will live survive flourish and rejoice not over the legislative acts of ignorant and prejudiced humanity but because of the possession of the genuine principles of good will to man love to all humanity and a willingness to trust in god and to obey the eternal rules for mens guidance which the ordinary man in his moneymaking money making materialism entirely ignores so it is that the people of utah and all other peoples who are trying to leao lead honest useful lives according to the lights that are before them for their guidance will in the future be monarchs of all they survey and teachers to those who now cannot comprehend the great duty of man were every man a polygamist and utah admitted as a state with plural marriage not only a privilege where one man and two women thus agree but a de der banded condition the blot on the page of american history would be less than the one made by the political parties in this country ii 1888 by the wholesale buying and selling of votes in which men of both parties and all other than mormon religion engaged in this connection attention is called to the following fact the american bible society is canvassing this country by states to see that every family is supplied with the bible As a result of the canvass it finds that maine a stronghold of republicanism and bitter against mormonism is the most ungodly mi y state in the union that maine n e has more than seventy towns in which religious service of any kind is seldom if ever held that miles of children are growing up without any teaching of god or their future that in even the best towns the ma majority arity of people are living outside of any bible christian influence in utah there is not a school district no matter how remote or how poor the pioneer where the bible and religious teaching are not foundations on which parents are living and educating their children ln in maine neal dow says that for the past twenty years he has been before the state legislature in n his efforts to promote temperance abdat and at last is forced to admit that temper bace as a principle makes no headway in ill that State aud that liquor selling and its work of pauper making fea goes on oil with in increasing creasing momentum 0 aln o utah a loving belief in goj a determination termination tte of religion and a foundation roun dation of temperance are the three uree great principles which never yet railed failed mankind are underlying SUI uk on oil which their social and busi nes fabric Is based and growing T in the new england states the majority nW rItY of the people are in favor of drunkenness and inclined to what is called smartness that is getting there even if you must run over the weak and go through a mans garden rather than to helping helpin of neighbors advance thought U cites all the statements in this article as facts that cannot be successfully cess fully tended le te nied ogain calling attention to the truth that the laws of man are not final advance thought |
