Show MORE RAILROADS THE consolidation of railroads mentioned in another part of this paper Is ie of great importance to utah whatever may be the scheme at t I 1 e back of it the rio bio grands grande befit western ern is evidently to be the intermediate line af a road from denver to the pacific coast if it means an opening of the central pacific to the east independent of the union pacific it will be of f benefit to this territory in macay ways the advantages perhaps will be equally great if it signifies a route for an other company the time must come and that before long when the union pacific and the central pacific will be inde pendent of each other the two companies have been united only by the junction of their rails and the maintenance of their separate Inte interests reste which were independent because of that junction the recent consolidation of branch lines that act as feeders to the union is a step towards separation it may be that the present movement is another they are bound to be rivals and by different connections to compete for the traffic across the continent from coast to coast more railroads competing lines mean greater facilities for trans pois tation to and from our borders cheaper freights and larger travel and these mean increased material prosperity independent of the labor which chmill will be created by the extension of these them lines salt lake will yet become a great railroad centre A big mistake was made when the advice of president brigham young was rejected by the two roads and the north instead of the south end of the lake was made the point of their meeting that error will either be remedied or an independent line to the pacific coast will run south of the saline inland sea bring on your railroads the more the mer merrier they will all add to the wealth the population and the development of the oldest and best of the territories of the united states |
