miles northwest nor thweat elon elein is a beautiful city situated oo on fox river kiver it cot bains about inhabitants and is a lively business place the elgin watch company keep several hundred men employed and other established hiving giving employment employ benl and business it has a most excellent country surrounding it prom from elgin I 1 cameon came on to this place the distance from ohio to illinois affords a remarkable kable contrast not the sound of a hammer was to be heard in the dockyard in sandusky the machine shops were nearly all on OD the standstill while men were patrolling pat roling the streets looking after something to d for many were want ing bread and work as well the breweries were busy and the two there were capable of turning out barrels of beer annually I 1 was shown through one immense establish ment which was kept neat and clean the machinery was bright and everything appeared orderly and convenient there was no fault apparent except to those who look more atter after the get gei oral welfare of the community than after the accumulation of ill gotten gain the great fault which exists is however bringing sorrow poverty and misery to mavy many homes and families saloons abound in sandusky and are kept open sundays with impunity many inducements are offered to draw custom and one of them rt rc mar kably well in these hard bard time almee A table is kept well supplied with a variety of eatables free to all who buy a glass or two of beer sometimes only one five cent glass of beer is taken and the hungry man with a small purge puree gets a cheap lunch were it not noi for some who take mat mai y glasses the keeper of free lunch saloons would come to grief I 1 learned of one oce man who boasted he be took eighty glasses in one day those free lunch stands in the city are more largely patronized than any other business lu in the vici vicinity nily the outlook of not only sandusky bandusky but of other cities to we me deemed sad enough the acting mayor of chicago proposed to make some provisions for the many poor I 1 remember in utah there was a policy to feed the indians to keep them from stealing now chicago begins to think of a similar policy with the u unemployed the mayor says there would be less jew holdups hold ups robberies and ott stealing eling it those out ot of employment were locked after there is every appearance ot of trouble in the near future unless some remedy to is provided to avert the calamity it used to be said the labor to is great but the laborers are few but now it poems reverse in some mutters matters the people of elgin complain of ther the the stringency of the money market but evidence ol of life and trade is ia more noticeable there than in many other places I 1 have visited one mile out from the city is ia situated the northern hospital of insane patients of illinois this institution attracted my attel altet tion and turned my footsteps this his way one particular patient in whom I 1 have deep interest is an inmate vf of this institution soon boon after my arrival a streetcar took me up to the gateway and guard house where I 1 was referred to the head doctor and by him to a department separate from the main building with permission to have an au audience alence with david smith the youngest son eon of joseph smith the martyr after suitable arrangements were made I 1 was introduced into the reception room where I 1 met my friend david the keeper wished to know how bow long an audience was delreo dei reo thirty minu miu ute tep it if you please will answer I 1 was wall left alone to visit with one whom I 1 have desired very much to see for a long time and now chave I 1 have fulfilled ful fillod a portion of my program laid out before leaving my moui mountain tain home it was fifteen years since I 1 last saw and conversed with david then be was in salt bait lake city a slim trim young map man investigating the difference that exists between the reorganized church and that organized by his hie father the that prophet in 1830 the result of his researches convinced him that he had imbibed in his bis young and tender years some ideas contrary to the truth abi I 1 believe operated on his tender mind I 1 well remember that on the occasion of my last conversation he be stated that his health was failing him and he be would be obliged to diSC discontinue public speaking I 1 was surprised to find david on this visit so much altered niche he will w weigh I 1 b I 1 judge no less than aben iq Hs about about six feet two inches in hight bight fie a said he felt as he looked well and was comfortable I 1 gave him a picture or of his cousin john smithy smith ls new cottage in salt lake city which pleased him very much he said he was gratified to know that his cousin was so well off when I 1 told him I 1 had brought it as a present for him he said he would take it to big room and appreciate it very much he said aid he bad a slight recollection of me and his bis cousins joseph F and john he never had much acquaintance in utah I 1 was to tell his big cousins he be was waa pretty well and getting along comfort ably and that they were building up and improving re fering foring no doubt to a new building going up near at hand band pertaining to the institution his conversation was at times attended with a little absent mindedness but be was mild and inoffensive as a jamb he is numbered with those who are on probation that Is ia to say a division who are only slightly affected and who are granted privileges to walk out without a guide david beeps himself cleanly the keeper salu he was fond of music and would enjoy a few tunes at times I 1 was wa pleased to find him so comfortably situated and to talk with him I 1 tilt to bless him fully believing that the time will come that he will come out from his bis present condition and honor his fathers fat herts name in which wish thousands thiu theu sands will join with me after performing this little portion of my trip and having distributed over reminiscences of joseph smith and the coming forth of the bok of mormon most of them on the pair fair grounds at chicago some of which went to foreign nations as messengers of the gospel I 1 turned my face homeward EDWARD STEVENSON |
