Show ACROSS THE LAKE the hiiter had the good fortune last saturday to be invited to accompany the good roads delegates on n little excursion from ogden across the lucin cut oft and back and of course the invitation was joyfully accepted promptly at 2 a 1 handsome train ot of chair cars hitched to a monster compound eng engine ine pulled out of the union depot yards at ogden loaded with z a t jolly bunch ot of delegates their friends and wives the entire party being guests oc the railroad company and chaperoned by abst ticket passenger agent D S spell spencer of salt lake city there were nere also a number of other officials on board and nothing was left undone that would add to the comfort and pleasure of the excursionists A quick run was made to the edge of the lake and as the iron horse commenced to sail across the lake the sensation was indeed new and novel after the qualms of a sea voyage on oil a transatlantic liner the experiment of riding across the water on oil dry laud land was something unique but it was mighty pleasant from the tha east shore to promontory point the grade has been filled in completely but for a short trestle to ta I 1 permit the waters of bear river to flow through and into the broad lake beyond the road bed is sino othe and solid the train went thundering along as though it were running over oner a track that was nias ballasted ballested bal lasted and strengthened beyond ill all possible chance of its giving away As promontory point was neared the great open mountain side told the story of where the earth and rocks came from to make maka the lill fill thus tar far on the gigantic engineering engine erins feat at the station ou the point the railroad company has planted a beautiful green grass plane which is in striking contrast to the otherwise dry null and dietary spot shade trees send their broad leafy limbs out in the upper air for the comfort of man and fowl foul as well as for the further beautifying of the surroundings the greatest part of the construction work on oil the cutoff cut off oft is between promontory point and lake side on the NN western estern shore of the lake it is marvelous how the work has be been en accomplished and how the splendid roadbed is maintained and hept in repair I 1 against the ravages of the storms and waves to do this a big foree fores e of men is at continually filling in earth and rockland rock sand strengthening th ening the grade As the track leaves promontory I 1 point it turns slightly to the left then hen shoots as straight as an ail arrow across the lake for the other side one can look along it for a great distance then it fades into oblivion as the line of distinction becomes blended with the water but those two and sometime four and at other times six lails bear mute testimony to the greatness of the human brain and intellect as they lj glisten in the sunlight seeming to in 1 vite the steam monster to go faster and faster over their smooth solid surface in the middle of the lake with the water registering fifty feet deep stands a station it is built ou on trestles and in fact Is a part of the twelve miles of 0 solid wood trestle which was constructed ted and never filled in with earth because of the great depth of the water at mid lake in tile the middle of the great salt lake and elevated eleva teti feet above the lebel of the sea t the company has constructed a modern railroad yard with numerous tracks and here it is that the great transcontinental flyers pass each other A regular station force Is employed and all the conveniences of a modern railroad station are to be found an interesting part of the wil was the passing over the portion of the roadbed aich chich was destroyed last spring by the great storm that swept the lake it Is now in condition once more but the load men have to continually haul rocks and gravel on it in order to keep the grade from being washed away by the action of the waves at lake side evidences ei dences are plentiful of what it has required to make the fill across the lake A huge mountain is slowly being cut down for tho th purpose of getting material to build the ali a load with rocks live five and six tons toils in weight are blasted loosed from the solid mountain side and placed on the dump cars to be taken out onto the grade in fact all along the grade on both sides these mammoth boulders boul deis are placed at the edge of the grade for the purpose of binding the loose earth nd keeping the embankment intact As soon as lake side was readied reached a new engine was hitched on oil the rear end of the train and the tun lun for ogden was as commenced the distance ii irom om ogden to lake side is 47 12 1 2 miles and it was C 20 ahen the excursionists aniced at the junction city those from the north being greatly surprised and pleased to find that the cache valley tiala had bad waited for them so ho as quickly as the transfer could be made from one train to tile the other oilier the start for home was made the hu impressive thing about the cutoff cut off is the demonstration there given or of just how much nian man is able to do in ill competing with nature and in conque tile the seemingly impossible ill ble and making it to serve his purpose but when it Is remembered that the man who did this was the late E if harriman then the wonder of 0 it all is not so eo cicat for his life spelled success in every particular and the things ulich lie was afraid to attempt were very few indeed for I or a delightful and instructive tour our there is rione none bettor than one olle over the lucin cutoff cut off olf |
