university to be a crowning feature of the whole cb church school system the credit and honor of founding the university may be shared by the latter day saints as a whole whale inasmuch as the people while convened in general conference unanimously adopted a resolution which being sincerely desirous of fostering education in our midst we the members of toe the atea body religious worshipers known and designated as the church of Jewis christ of latter day saints now in general conference assembled ou on the ath day ot of april 1892 do re tully request the presiding luing officers of our church for ue uc and in our behalf to found upon much beoh trusts and to endow on in such manner as they may beem wise and proper an institution of learning of high grade to be commonly called by us the church university ver sity we the latter day saints hereby express our wila and full fall determine de ion to aid to the lull full extent of our power the authorities of our church to in building up said university 91 this pledge will always be a source of encouragement to the officers ceris of the now new school and will help to confirm them in the belief which they now all seem to share that a great institution has come into being in compliance with the request above expressed the authorities author ties of the church have founded tend and endowed the church university and it Is expected that most moot of tue cie funds lor for the building up of this institution will hereafter he como come from them th individual bequests are earnt earnestly atly solicit ed d the family of the late president brigham young haveit is understood generously donated land for the site of 01 the amounting in value to fifty thousand dollars and upwards another bequest of handsome tiong for the founding of a library is contemplated by other parties the salt bait lake library and scientific association has already given material aid to the university pity and will affiliate with it la in the future A general interest indeed seems to have been awak awakened enod and there to is little doubt out but that thai the university will grow rapidly and have a prosperous career certain it is the opening this week has been most propitious good sized classes buth in chemistry and in natural philosophy the only university studies to be undertaken yar belar have been formed and work in the lecture room into effect sept 1890 prior to this time there there had bad been about thirty buildings building in the city used ier school purposes aes the atone building known as the fourteenth school had bad ben b en used for pupils of the grammar grade upon the opening of we the year a high school was created in the ibe above mentioned building with E M collins colline as principal nine pu vils from the public and private schools of the city applied for stamis sion ion and were accordingly registered the greatest number of 01 schools in operation during the year was twenty three we be total number of teachers teacher employed one hundred and one the total enrollment of pupils out of a school census of the number of school sittings was 2728 the new system contemplated twelve grades primary grammar
