The Mountain Man Rendezvous was explained in the Cub Scout brochure as follows. Have you ever asked yourself what a Mountain Man was? Is a Mountain Man a mythical creation of someone imagination? No, indeed not, Mountain Men were very real people at one time in our history. If you live in the Western United States along the Great Rocky Mountains, as we do in Utah, then the Mountain Man of yesterday played a very big part in our heritage. This is why we have decided to bring to life once again, the heritage of our great land. We combine competition, lots of fun, and a chance for all of us to learn more about the American Mountain Man and the way he lived, by forming the Cub Scout Mountain Man Retreat. During the middle 1700s to the middle 1800s, there was a great demand in other countries for the fur of the Beaver. It was used to make fine clothes and very expensive hats, and in these other countries it was considered quite an honor to wear clothes and hats that were made from the Beaver fur. It was known throughout the Eastern United States, that out west in the Rocky Mountains, there were lots of Beaver. But, it took a special kind of man to withstand the cold winters and hostile Indians and stay in the Rocky Mountains and trap the valuable Beaver. To the men of the mountains, the abundance of Beaver was the driving force that made these men explore the mountains, rivers, and the valleys in the West. Thus, making it possible for later settlement of people, our ancestors. Thank you and lets have fun. Telford looks on.
