Bud and Mary Talbot And Family Do you know that birth defects strike one of every 12 infants born each year in the United States? That more inthan a quarter-millio- n fants are affected annually? The mission of the March of Dimes is a clear, direct one: the prevention of birth defects through programs of research, medical services and education. For more than four decades, the press has been extremely generous in helping advance our mission to prevent birth defects the nations number one child health problem. Because you care, we wish to thank you for your continuing use of our materials. Edward A. Franck March of Dimes School and Home by Dr. Daryi J. A team of educators describe this procedure with an acronym, LEAST." The letters in that catch-wor- d describe the discipline process. L Leave it alone. Your first option when a problem arises is to do just that to avoid magnifying the problem or calling attention to a matter that doesnt deserve it. In effect, you may be rewarding disruptive behavior by taking notice of it. E End the action. If the childs act demands attention, it is important not to over-reac- t, but to stop the misbehavior. Often a look of the eye can be more effective than a harsh word. A Attend to it more fully. If the earlier approaches dont work, you may have to attack the problem at the root. Before you do, make sure you have the necessary information to change the childs behavior. What happened? Why did it happen? How the child feels about it is important, too. S Spell out directions. The next step after you have done your research is to decide whether (1) your directions are clearly understood and possible to accomplish and (2) your child realizes the consequences of following, or failing to follow, your directions. Positively reward good behavior when it occurs and make clear the punishment for any future disruptive behavior. T Track your childs progress. Have a way to monitor the progress of your childs behavior. When you have enough information, sit down and discuss that progress or lack of it. Mutually agree on what should happen if the misbehavior improves or if it continues. These are generalizations, which means that you will use your own judgment in supplying the details. But thats the way it should be, since no two children are alike. You , the parent, know best how to apply those generalities. May your relations with your children improve 1,000 per cent at LEAST. Fuel I March of Dimss concamed with defects the March in some affected are Americans million of Dimes, some mental handicaps. or way by physical Birth defects strike 720 children born each day in the United States, says the March of Dimes. Thats one child born every other minute with physical or mental damage. Birth defects are this nations major child health problem. The March of Dimes reports that more than a quarter-millio- n (nfonfai are born every year with physical or mental damage. Although a world leader in many areas, America falls short when it comes to protecting one of its most precious natural resources its children. According to the March of Dimes, the United States has a higher infant death rate than 15 other countries. Each year, 50,000 babies are born weighing 4 lbs., 6 oz. or Ipbb, reports the March of Dimes. These infants are at severe risk of death during their first year of life. Motherhood after age 35 is not as dangerous as it was once thought to be. The March of Dimes says that many medical advances can now help insure a healthy outcome to the pregnancies of more mature women. Fortunately for many babies, mental retardation caused by congenital hypothyroidism can be prevented. Hie New England Regional Congenital Hypothyroidism Detection Program, which receives funding from the March of Dimes, detects and coordinates the treatment of infants with this birth defect. Prematurity threatens the health and survival of many newborns. The March of Dimes, working for the elimination of birth defects, encourages early prenatal care to reduce the risk of prematurity. If youre pregnant, think before you drink, says the March of Dimes. Scientists have found that many children born to women who drink excessively during pregnancy have a pattern of physical and mental birth defects called fetal alcohol syndrome. ... The March of Dimes urges women to see a doctor as soon as they think they are pregnant. Early, regular prenatal care is vital to a healthy outcome of pregnancy. According to the March of Dimes, birth defects caused by rubella (German measles) can be prevented if women of childbearing age are vaccinated against the disease before they become pregnant. If youre pregnant, smoking is not only hazardous to your health but to your unborn babys too. Hie March of Dimes reports that low birthweight, a birth defect, is twice as common among women who smoke during pregnancy as among Nutrition plays a vital role in pregnancy, reports the March of Dimes. One main reason why many babies are born too soon or too small is because their mothers eat poorly or unwisely while pregnant. The March of Dimes emphasizes the benefits of prenatal care. Statistics show that low birthweight, a birth defect, and infant death rates are much higher for mothers who have no prenatal care. Research is the key to removing the threat of birth defects from future generations. To that end the March of Dimes channels millions of dollars annually into birth defects No one is immune to birth defects. According to 15 . . MFS now has known reserves of three trillion cubic feet , enough to carry It lor IS years al the present rule of consumption; Mr. ('olemun said, : Consumers warned of labeling change Hie Utah Department of Agriculture wishes to alert consumers of an important change in the labeling of processed meat products which could affect their safety. Processed meats traditionally cured with nitrites, such as hot dogs, corned beef, bacon, ham, and cold cuts, may now be produced without nitrites. Unless consumers carefully read the labels on these products, there could be a significant increase in the number of people seriously ill from botulism food poisoning. Archie S. Hurst, Director of the Division of Food and Consumer Services for the Department says that now for the first time, the meat industry is permitted to manufacture nitrite-fre- e or uncured meat products like hot dogs, ham, corned beef, bacon, and cold cuts and label them by their common name (i.e. Uncured Bacon). Prior to this new U.S. Department of Agriculture (U.S.D.A.) regulation, hot dogs without nitrite, for example, would have to be labeled uncured cooked sausage. Consumers must now carefully read the labels when they purchase uncured meat products, to make sure they know what they are getting and the proper handling procedures. Without nitrites, these products will not keep as long as meat cured With nitrites, and must be handled like fresh meat. Because of the possibility of spilage, you can keep uncured meats in the refrigerator only 4 to 7 days; not 2 to 3 weeks as you can meats that contain nitrites. Nitrites alio inhibit the growth of botulism, the most dangerous and deadly food poison. According to John Poulson, Supervisor of the Food Program for the Department, the Bacteria that causes botulism grows only in the absence of oxygen and other ideal conditions such as warm temperatures. Hie bacteria which causes botulism may thrive in the interior parts of meat where there is little or no oxygen. You cannot detect botulism by ordinary sight and smell examination. So consumers will be able to distinguish which products do not contain nitrites, the new regulation that the labels on says nitrite-fre- e products must carry the word Uncured as part of the product name (i.e. Uncured Bacon) and the statement No Nitrate or Nitrite Added. Hie new regulation also says that the labels of UNCURED meat products must carry s warning: Not Preserved, Keep Refrigerated Below 40 degrees farenhelt it all times. SO REMEMBER, if you buy uncured masts: Keep it . . refrigerated; Dont let it set on the table or counter; Dont pack uncured meat sandwiches In a brown bag lunch unless you keen It cold until lunch time. ' Use mast within 4 to 7 days or follow storage instructions on the labels of packaged meats.
