Only accidents kill more of them. Because we don't talk much about suicide, a lot of myths come along. Ted Lovato, a school counselor, passed along some observations on these fables. Some people think those who talk about suicide don't go through with it; that it happens without warning; that suicidal people are fully intent on dying; and that once a person is suicidal, he or she is that way forever. Those are complete or somewhat mistaken beliefs. Eight of ten individuals who kill themselves have given definite warnings about their plans. Studies show that the suicidal person gives many clues and warnings regarding suicidal intentions. Contrary to the idea that suicidal persons are bent on dying, researchers say they're undecided and they "gamble with death, leaving it to others to save themAlmost no one commits suicide without letting others know his or her feelings. Individuals who want to kill themselves are usually suicidal only for a limited period, and, once past the crisis, can live lives of accomplishment and happiness. Some warning signals of a teenager's suicide attempt may be loss of appetite; abnormal sleepiness; insomnia; loss of interest and in school work; direct or indirect talk about the giving away of prized possessions. Lovato says persons who express the death wish, either vaguely or explicitly, should not be ignored. If one persn will express sincere concern for the potential suicide, Lovato says, it may save a life. discussion will help relieve An atmosphere of free parent-chila lot of anxiety.
