Show r' Tr V ep ? CLEARFIELD Children s play by Cliff Bachison Assistant Editor A delightful childrens Androcles and the play, Lion, opened Monday night at the Val A. Browning Center for the Performing Arts Cellar Theatre. Androcles and the Lion, a story that dates back to the Roman Empire, was made famous by George Bernard Shaw who wrote a version of the play rich with satirical on religion, insights and government the relationship of the sexes. The version being per- formed at Weber State College, under the direction of Martin L. Kelly, is something entirely different from the celebrated Shaw version. Written by Aurand Harris, this play is a nice piece of fluff designed to and children entertain judging from the response it received opening night, in this it did succeed. A slave named Androcles unwittingly becomes the talone a stereotype miser humorously played by Ralph Orton. In order to keep his niece Isabellas dowery for himself, keeps the beautiful girl, convincingly played by Ronda Bickmore, under lock and key. The old bugger victim in a roman circus. This version employs many of the characters that originated in the Comedia del Arte style of theatre made famous during the Italian Renaissance. Pan- - Without the wit that is present in the Shaw version, a great deal of imagination is required by the director to make this fable entertaining to an audience. Martin L. Kelly has my hires a pompous admiration for the clever captain, played by Kenny Flamm, to keep Isabellas lover Lelio, played by Don ' Glover, from reaching her.
