But even m the college and proh ssional ranks the sues of well-buil- the signal callers differ. Brigham Young likes iheir quat let hacks to be tall, Utah d sn't si cm to mind how tall in stature the quarterback Is, I hat brings up the high sc hoot scene. Coaches don't get a say ut the sue of their signal caller, they Just go with the player who can get the job done1. MANY PEOPLE think that Rvan Sanford of Viewmont is too small to play the top position tor the Vikings but you could never convince him of the fact When asked about his sue Rvan was quick to point out, "I ran Tarkenton, at 5"9, is only two inches taller than I am, and I dont hear too many people telling him hes too small to play. Ryan says hes 57 and about 140 pounds but at times he looks at his sie as an advantage rather than a drawback. "I he taller ones seem to be slower. might be small but I consult r myself pretty quick." 1 RUE, ONE of Rvan's mam assets is his ability to run with the football and while 1 some people of his sue would rather watch someone else toie the pigskin, Ryan enjoys j (i carrying once In a while. He does possess good speed to go along with his great quickness Ryan, ond his coaches, also feel he can throw the football. "I cant throw it 75 yards like Muir of Bountiful but I can throw the ball about 55 yards. In our offense though 1 dont have to throw the real long ball," HE BECAME a quarter-ba- c k in a unique way. "I was at Centerville Junior and was nlaving in gym one day. We had a contest like the punt, pass and klc k thing and I won and Coach Ron Moore asked me to try out for the Job. I did and have been the signal caller for this group ever since. This group, as he calls it, are used to winning having come up through the sophomore and Junior varsity ranks. Ryan also feels that the attitude Is better this year at the Viking school. "Last year the players were intimidated by some of the teams we played. Skyline for example had us beat before our team took the field, but we don't think that way." RYAN EXEMPLIFIES the group at Viewmont this year in that they are all highly competitive, and they don't like to lose. These guys Will do anything to win and the seniors optimism is overflowing and being picked up by the juniors. He may be smdll in stature but he doesn't lack guts and courage. Don't worry about Sanford on the field, hell battle with anyone and he hopes to be part of a turn around in football for the Vikings this season. One has to believe in him. - BOUNTIFUL Ever wonder what it would be like to get back at one of your bosses? Bountiful football coach, Paul Waite, gets another shot at a one time boss of his this coming F nday under the lights at Bountiful. CAUSE FOR the reunion of shorts is the football game between the Braves and the Bengals of Brighton High. As some know the Bengals are coached by Steve Dangerfield who used to be the head man at Viewmont in years past. In the year 1971 both and Waite were on the Vike staff with Steve being the head man. Paul then went on to take over, and turn around, the football program at Bountiful. The next three years m competition against one another Dangerfield always came out on top. Then Ddn-gerfie- Ws- - and downing the Bengals in overtime giving Coach Waite his first win over Coach Dan-gerfiel- When asked what it means to coach against each other both had praise for the other. Coach Waite noted about his counterpart, "Hes a proven success m high school. A great coach and its always nice to beat the best." You can see a small twinkle in his eye when Paul talks about winning against Dangerfield. COACH WAITE expects the Brighton club to run the option play well and to be as physical as any team theyll Idee this year. Word from the Bengals is that they too expect a tough Ij V . if uf ft. r ,?, j withers 4-- ii really be good if we had gone to Viewmont " - This BOUNTIFUL Friday a brand new rivalry will begin on the Viewmont High football field when nearby Woods Cross will invade to do battle on the gridiron for the first time in the young schools history. to schools have never met in varsity competition the bitter feelings that go along with natural rivalries are already problems, anything to win. there. THE COACH went on to say that his boss, Coach Danger-fielwas looking forward to d, playing Paul again and that he noted it had been a long year since losing to the Braves. Brighton brings some top rated plavers into town with them this Friday led by quarterback Dave Grill. A six foot senior Grill is an ideal option player who enjoys running with the ball. The other two running backs are seniors Brian Foster at tailback and will do team Mark captain. Gaykowski is a returning starter from last year at a linebacker spot. So the scene is set for a great ballgame between two state teams from a year ago. Although listed as just a preseason these two coaches and teams will pull all stops to win.
