Show I -- w- WEEKLY REFLEX DAVIS NEWS JOURNAL. JULY 27. 1978 Softballers Complaining About Condition Of Fields By DAVE WIGHAM Many softballers around the area have been complaining about the condition of the playing fields for their night contests wondering why the city cant take proper care of the infield. Clearfield Ready To Challenge For Region can By DAVE WIGHAM - CLEARFIELD Falcon fans have to be more optimistic about their football team this season since they dont have to go through the same kind of coaching changes they went through a year ago, WITH FOOTBALL only a week ago last year the Clearfield head man resigned to pursue a full time rodeo career, a decision he hasn't regretted. In stepped Brent Hancock, who had earned a winning reputation at Bonneville High and at Weber State, to try to throw together a good football season. He did just that IT TAKES time for a coach to install his system, it takes the players some time to get used to the new coach and his thinking. This marks the second year that these players will played under the hae Hancock system and things have to be better Again last year the kids werent sure about the new coach on the block but after their accomplishments of a year ago, getting into the playoff situation for a state berth, the kids have that much needed confidence in their head man has a about COACH HANCOCK simple philosophy coaching in the high school scene rather than the college scene he came from. In . be picky college you about who you play, all you can do m high school is coach the kids you have to get after it This year the Falcons have some players who simply love to get after people. One of the best known names in the Clearfield camp will be Steve Beal Steve went both ways last year as a defensive back and as a wide receiver. He has good speed and good hands on offense and is a manhunter on the defensive unit He led the club in interceptions a year ago and was near the top in total tackles BOUNTIFUL FANS will remember Steve from last year, it was he that inter- cepted a Brave pass and returned it for a touchdown Also slated to see action both ways will be senior Rodger Vincent Vincent will go at the tight end spot, he has good size and speed, and might see action either as a defensive end or linebacker ONE OF the better running backs in the league will wear a Clearfield uniform this year with Mike Arrant coming back for his senior year. Mike has both power and speed and will be the center of the Falcon attack. With these three top players back, along with many others, and a coach that has won the players respect the Falcons will finish near the top again this season. WHAT THEY dont realize is that after the crew works on the field there is no one there to keep everyone off the playing surface. Last week while playing a night game on the Mueller Park diamond on 1800 South this shortstop was down on a routine ground ball, boy I was looking good, when the ball took a strange bounce and hit me in the mouth almost putting a tooth through the lip. Then after inspection of the infield one could see tire marks and other unusual markings IMMEDIATELY SOME of the players blamed the lack care on the part of the city as the cause. They knew it wasn't a players error. But they soon came to know of better. Mike Hall is m charge of the city diamonds and he knows about the problems. We have to do some of the diamonds m the morning and then in the afternoon the neighborhood kids go over and play on the field and then some little league teams practice before the games start. Its a problem and if anyone has the answer wed like to know. TRUE WITH all the diamonds to take care of there is no one around to keep these kids off the diamond. Neil Jenkins, the head of the Parks and Recreation, realizes the problem is there and he too is open for suggestions. One under consideration is to bring in some clay base for the infield- Betty Crocker Layer Ca'ic F,lines m Betty Crocker Ready to Frosting Pack Candy Bar ANOTHER POSSIBILITY is to put grass in the infield, except around the bases, which would cut down on the time of care the diamond would need. One of the biggest complaints is the batters box. By the time one or two games have been played there is a huge hole around home plate, the clay base would take of 16 oz. SO THE one of not Family Size Colic Ci Sprite Swifts Woods Cross Ready For Second Season By DAVE WIGHAM - WOODS CROSS With everyone back, including the water boy, the Wildcats are heading into their second year of varsity competition this coming year. Things are looking up for Coach Wally Hawkins and his troops. IN THEIR baptismal year last season the young Cats gave their fans some exciting moments on the field. Included was their win over Morgan, a club that went on to win the state championship for their division. Although the Cats never reached their goal of winning in the tough Region Four league they did gain the respect and attention of opposing coaches. In talking to some of the head mentors around the area many of them mentioned the Cats when talking about good teams this year. Being as biased as I am, I always considered Utah to be ahead of Idaho in thinking and inovations. But after playing ball in Utah for so many years and then traveling up north to our neighboring state for a couple of softball tournaments, I find that the potato growers have come up with an idea that merits some consideration. season began last year and was hampered somewhat in his throwing This year he reports no problem with the shoulders and should be ready to go full speed at the quarterback spot In the backfield, one must have good running to complement the passing, the fats are looking good with a beefed up Dave Powell returning. Dave came to the Cats from Granger, you know the school that goes bananas over power lifting, and word has it that he is up around the 195 pound mark for this season. will be the calling of balls and strikes. Everyone has their own idea about the strike zone, where it should be and where the umpires always miss it. THE MAIN problem that the Woods Cross club will probably face this year is the expectations of those who follow them. Already people are assuming that with everyone back the Wildcats are a shoo in for the league title. This may turn out to be the case, they might win the league, but a lot of times the number of players returning to a squad fails to impress the other teams Last year the Cats made some mental and physical errors that were expected of players that hadnt stepped on a varsity football field Give the Wildcats credit though, they werent intimidated by anyone This year with a lot of experience bac k those errors should drop off WOODS CROSS has some good people returning in the the Wildcats have some in Greg Tuttle, who could play either tight end or wide receiver. Mark LeChaminant is another speedster who could cause problems for the opposition. Up front making the holes, and keeping the opponents the quarterback, the Wildcats have the likes of John Montgomery, Mark Tate, Andy Boehem and Jason Whitney These four have all grown this past year and they learned all the tricks of the trade in the trenches off of last year THE CATS have more players, stars, than those listed, but these will be the mamstavs for their seasonal efforts. Coach Hawkins has a good staff to work with him and the Woods Cross organization is looking forward lo this season of Your Home flow!! The pitcher knew what he had to hit in order to get the strike called and the hitter also knew what he had to protect. In Idaho they only use this carpet where the umpires arent paid They too assume the paid officials know what they're doing. It would be nice to see this carpet idea put lo use in this area, on all levels of play no matter if using paid or volunteer umpires home THE ONE problem about this system is that they dont have a fool proof method of helping the umpires on the bases lay gus A-- 1!
