Show J -- I WEEKLY REFLEX St The chapel of the Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Layton is the setting for two masses which are held twice daily in addition to five masses scheduled on Sunday. MAY 18, 1978 FOLK LAYTON t Rose of Church Lima Church, 85 Street, Layton, in addition to being a spiritual center for over 4, 000 Catholic people who live in the area from Kays-vill- e to Sunset, is also a community center where dances, parties and meetings are held in the hall located next to the chapel ACCORDING to Father Thomas Murphy, C S P , the church serves about 550 families in the north part of Davis County The three priests who head the church all live in the rectory which is attached to the building In addition to the chapel, the hall and the rectory, the parish also supervises a school which is located across the street from the Layton High School next to the LDS Seminary THE CHURCH building is named for St Rose of Lima, a Dominican nun who lived in Peru and was sainted for her good works Construction on the building began in 1947. The chapel is in use much of the day since a mass is held every morning at 9 a m. and at 5 15 p.m. each day, Monday through Saturday. are services Regular scheduled five times on Sun12 30 8, 9 30, 11 a m , day and 6 p.m. A Saturday night mass is also scheduled at 6 pm Father Murphy said that the Sunday evening mass is usually a folk mass where guitars and other musical instruments contribute to the services part of all masses Father Murphy said since 1966 all of the mass is performed in English rather than in Latin The musical accompaniment is performed in the area between the first pew and the altar while the officiating priest performs the mass. In the room behind the altar, known as the sacristy, the priest prepares for the mass and puts on the robes that are worn during the mass MUSIC IS a also located in the church. The Catholic, when confessing, can either choose to talk to the priest face to face or may speak from behind the screen to protect his anonymity. This choice has been th procedure for about a year, Father Murphy said. IN addition to the masses that are held in the chapel, wed- funerals, baptisms, dings, confirmation and first communion services are held there. The children are confirmed when they reach grade eight if they have met all the requirements and learned the lessons taught in catechism classes. Bishop Joseph Lennox Federal, who heads the Salt Lake Diocese, attends the confirmation at the St Rose of Lima Church.
