Wise, Salt Lake District Director for the Internal Revenue Service. Although taxpayers are not required to use a specific recordkeeping system, receipts, cancelled checks, bills, old returns, and other written documents are essential in providing expenses. Wise suggested that records be kept three years after the return was due or filed, or two years after the tax was paid, whichever is later. Records involving property transactions should be kept for as long as they are helpful in determining the basis of original or replacement Wise added. property, More information about recordkeeping can be found in IRS Publication 552. Fitness tips - By Dr. Dale Nelson Professor of Health, Physical Education and Recreation Utah State University A number of studies have shown runners and active people to have favorable cholesterol levels. Even the distance that people run is found to be related to the amount of good cholesterol compared to total cholesterol. The part of these studies that seems to get little attention is the fact that runners also tend to be lean. Now the point is that there is a great deal of evidence from many different studies that groups of lean people tend to have more favorable cholesterol levels regardless of why they are lean-tha- n people who are overweight. This doesnt necessarily mean that the running did not make a favorable contribution. There is no way to parcel out all the contributing factors. Leanness could be more important than we think. Hyperplastic Obesity Recent experiments of hyperplastic obesity (overweigh related to an excessive number of fat cells) and hypertrophic obesity (overweight related to a normal number of fat cells, but of excessive size), have shown that the number of fat cells in the body can increase at any age. It was formerly thought to occur early in life. Even though the size of fat cells can be reduced through diet and exercise, recent studies show that the number cannot be diminished. Once youve acquired a fat cell, youre stuck with it for life, and the more fat cells you have, the harder it is to lose weight and keep it off. In one study comparing hyperplastic subjects (number of fat cells) and hypertrophic subjects (size of cells) on a strenuous exercise program, it was found that, when allowed to eat as they pleased, the hyperplastic subjects lost no body fat, while the hypertrophic group did lose fat. So what, you sayl Well, it is obvious that the size and number of fat cells is significant. The most important point here also seems obvious. Dont let yourself get fat in the first place. Nevertheless, dont give up. You can and should get lean, because it is obvious that the lean people are going to inherit the earth. (It might help if you are meek, too). More on Fat (Thermogenlsls) It was formerly thought that thermogenisis, the transformation of excess calories into heat energy rather than storing excess energy as fat, occurred only in animals. We now know that it occurs in humans and may explain why some people are able to eat all they want and not get fat, whereas other people get fat with relatively little food intake. This phenomenon is believed to take place in adipose tissue called brown fat. Brown fat makes up only about one percent of body mass in humans, but when it gets revved-u- p it can produce an amount of heat equal to what the rest of the body can produce. We know that there is thermogenisis as well as therand now it appears that some cold from adaptation, produced mogenisis humans function better than others when it comes to either storing or burning excess calories. But dont let this discourage you if you are one that seems to have a e brown fat problem. changes can still be made to work, and who will produce more brown fat. knows, maybe you diet-induc- Life-styl- Turn in a news tip 825 - 1 666 good keeping Citizens invited to auction . Mid-wa- y between these two cities, Disney World captures the imagination of both young and old as millions flock to this fabulous entertainment center. Disney World has some competition from Circus World, Stars Hall of Fame, Cyprus Gardens, Sea World, Daytona Beach and Speedway, Marineland, Kennedy Space Center, Sidewalk Art Festivals, and hundreds of other major events. At Lake Wales, we attended the citys Junior League Award banquet as guest of Mr. and Mrs. Leroy C. Smith, with their son Steven who pitched a no-h-it game for Little League last year. Lake Wales is also known for the famous Boc Tower and Burt Reynolds famous Supper Club, where Hollywoods highest motion picture star drops in to chat with tourists. Music lovers can take their pick from Orlandos Symphony, The prestigious Boch Festival, Encore Opra, Pop Concerts, Country Music Association, and many music related groups. Planetariums, tennis courts, sailing, with 83 parks, 19 recreational areas, some 300 lakes are some of the attractions offered by Orlando. Mrs. John Scarborough hosted a dinner party at the famous Duff Smorgasbord, only one of Orlandos 155 restaurants. We found Delta Airlines to be the most courteous carriers in air travel. We enjoyed our flight to Florida on a super-save- r ticket and when we wanted to extend our vacation one more week, Delta not only granted our request, we were given seats on their Special, non-sto-p flight from Atlanta to Salt Lake City, at no extra cost! In flight I met Col. Robert J. Reid, Superintendent of Utah Highway Patrol who had been to Southern states to introduce to law enforcement officers, a new radar control which Utah has developed. This is something that Utahns can be proud to acclaim. On arriving home it was a pleasure to learn that a request by this column had been granted by PM Magazine. Although an evaporative cooler becomes less efficient as humidity rises, it is able to perform effectively during 95 degrees.
