Local residents, though unaware, are part of his dream come true. Master Lu claims the philosophy of martial arts doesnt center merely on but or external Kung-Faltogether is a way of life that has brought greater superior health and found no other place. His object is to teach and Help self-defens- e u, self-contr- nt people better understand the martial arts. And he does all this for the only, not for money or the praise of men. Master Lu presently instructs (internal Rung Fu) and other forms of the martial arts at the Tai-C- hi American Health Spa located in Roy. In the very near future, with help of friends, his classes will be moved to Sunset. The lessons will soon start to be taught at 1771 West 1900 South, in Sunset. Master Lu first began studying the martial art of Kung Fu when 13 years old, and studied in his homeland of Taiwan for 10 years. Hes been a master of the art for seven years. A gentle, but strong man of 31 years, Master Lu claims his biggest worry is that some people have a misconception to what Kung Fu really is and the whole purpose behind it. Many people have been guilty in the past of trying to use this art to gain money for themselves. This art wasnt meant to do that, said Master Lu. My purpose is to instruct people how this art can help them in a better way than merely Form of Kung Fu Master Cheng Tsang Lu says Tai Chi is a group of exercise forms found within the Kung Fu discipline, separately referred to by Master Lu as internal Kung Fu. Its reputed to be good exercise for even sick or elderly people as well as the healthy. Master Lus own teacher, Chen Ho Yin is presently 80 years old, and still teaches the art. Healthy old age is a usual benefit for followers of the art, he said. Some refer to Tai Chi as moving The movements are meditation. slow and smooth; the concentration is directed toward watching the hands and awareness of what goes on inside during movement. It is claimed that Tai Chi improves the general health of the body and develops internal, as well as physical strength. Master Lu states, It involves dance, meditation and the martial arts. When done slowly, its a beautiful art form, but when its done fast, its a method of defense. Learned in Taiwan When 13 years old and a native of his own country of Taiwan, Cheng Tsang was asked by a friend to attend a studio where the art was being performed. His friends instructor saw hope and some promise in the youth and invited him back. From that day hence, Master Lus life hasnt been ,, the same. He claims since being in the art, he hasnt been sick a day in his life, thats some 17 years without any kind of sickness. Master Lu has students who can bear testimony of the fact the art is designed to keep you in top physical shape. One student, Jack Line, who helped Master Lu become established in Salt Lake City, lost 8 inches off his waist line in 12 months. I dont want parents of young kids who want to learn of this art, to think its all fighting. There is much, much more to it than that, said Master Lu. He claims that over 10 million people in Taiwan perform in the art, which includes everyone almost. It is self-defens-e. '' rv A vw-- v. ', V- - . f t IK hCt . THE MARTIAL ARTS self-contr- taught in schools, parks and just about everywhere you go. He says life insurance is seldom sold for the simple fact, people are healthy enough to outlive sickness and death. He also claims that people in Taiwan hospitals, the few that are there, still practice the art while sick. Enters Sixth Year in U.S. Now in his fifth . year and fifth . month in the U.S.,,Master Lu states he, couldnt be happier about the growth the art has had. In 1974, Master Yin, his instructor and four students including himself, came to the United States to teach Kung Fu. For one year, the five men toured the state and taught Kung Fu to Americans. Then in 1975, Master Yin returned to his wife in Taiwan. Cheng Tsang Lu however, decided to stay in America, so he battled immigration and finally was permitted to stay. He started a Kung Fu school in Sugarhouse, married a local girl, and began to adapt to the American way of life. 1 ol me at the University of Utah, of whom I plan to send to Idaho in the near future to open another school there, said Master Lu. In an earnest way, Master Lu concluded, We want to help people and help people. Everyone is invited to attend our classes. If everyone in Utah were to give . me only one dollar, I could teach then ..the art the rest of their lives, wate hi! honest conclusion. Since Master Yin retired from his Kung Fu school in Taiwan, he wanted to come back to the states. He corresponded with Mr. and Mrs. Lu, made the necessary arrangements and came to live in Utah in the December of 1976. Master Lu has now seen schools open in Provo, Roy, Bountiful, Riverton as well as his own school in Salt Lake City.: I have one student who has helped , Plans for hatchery postponed Plans to reconstruct and modernize the Panguitch Hatchery have been postponed by the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources because of lack of funds. Panguitch Hatchery, one of 10 hatcheries currently in operation by the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, was scheduled to be remodeled this spring to repair dilapidated conditions. Funding for the renovation was to come from the sale of the Divisions Scott Avenue property in Salt Lake County and money saved from the closure of Beavery Hatchery, but these actions have generated less than $300,000 for a job estimated at about $500,000. Homer Stapley, field programs director for Wildlife Resources said, The Division was hoping to have the work completed by fall. However, we cant even advertise for the construction until we have the full amount of money in our hands. Due to the inadequate budget with which the Division is now operating, the project had to be dropped this year. onu Junior and Sand Ridge.
