Johnston, a senior at Clearfield, never quite visualized the day that she could be contending for the title of Outstanding Gymnast among six of the largest high schools in Northern Utah. But without question, today its a reality. The Falcons, led by Sid Conley and Paul Quigley as coaches, with Lori and her teammates behind them, are I I f - i 4 He 881 - V: r- K, m lel : yMfmA marching boldly toward another Region One team championship. Without Loris leadership I doubt wed be where we are today, said Coach Conley. Of course the feeling is mutual with Lori. When I was a sophomore, I didnt know a thing. Sid taught me the basics and Paul taught me some tricks, but I never dreamed Id be the senior Falcon this far today, admitted. As a junior, Lori put a stamp of seriousness on her gymnastics performances by taking second in Region In doing so she placed One very high in floor gnd vault events while taking first place in compulsory beam. As a senior, she was selected as a team captain. In the beginning of the year, eight hours of practice a day amount of was not an uncommon time to be devoted towards the sport. Coach Margo Jones, who guides Clearfield High's womens basketball team through the wintery months of the year, teame'd up with the elite of to lead them to a 5 and the and victory over the best of the contest staged last in an all-stweekend at the University of Utah. Jones has coiched womens teams at Clearfield for several years and to date has two state championships in the bag. One of those came in basketball while the other came during the spring in track and field. Karleen went six for ten from the field and two for two from the line. The girl that beat her out was Cindy Lyon of Olympus High School. Lyon led her team with 17 points, 8 rebounds and three steals. The Falcons, under the direction of Coach Jones and with plenty of help from Karleen, finished tied for the Region One title and eventually played Skyline High School for the state championship, which they lost. Jones, Peart lead group to 5 victory in charity contest Big Game NOW'S THE TIME THICK MON.-SA- Jackie averaged 18.0 points a game , and teamed up with Tina Gunn to average a combined 49 points a game, ofproviding BYU with its greatest fensive leadership ever. Jackie hit 53 percent from the field and 79 percent-frothe free throw line. For several weeks in the season she was among the top 20 leaders in the nation in free throw shooting. She is the second leading scorer in BYU history with 892 points in her first two seasons at BYU. e Jackie is also eighth on the rebound list with 251. She is a 0 sophomore guard.
