Show Sporfstacular Thursday December 20, 1979 Page By Bliss Fullmer Rylan Weidemier was a picture ot dejection, after fouling out in the final seconds of the championship game at Brigham City. The two teams had battled down to the wire in a game and Rylan had missed a shot that would have won for Roy. Weidemeier had gathered in a rebound of an errant Royal shot, and had only to muscle up for an easy bank shot, but the ball wouldnt drop. In the flurry that followed, as the ball rolled off the rim, Rylan was whistled for his fifth foul and ejected from the game. Weidemeier gives the Royals a lot of muscle inside and had helped his team defeat Tooele and Viewmont in two rugged games in the eight team tournament. His rebounding strength helped set the Royals up for a fight for the title, but then Rylans world caved in. The Royals surprised everyone is doing so well in the three-da- y tourney. Coach Ted Smith began the season with only one returning letterman and took a few early season lumps from the likes of Olympus and Ogden. But the cagey Royal fox has been doing his homework and his charges are starting to jell as a team. Ted was named Outstanding Coach for the stellar performance of his team. No one from Roy was considered for the Most Valuable Player award of the tourney but three Royals did make the allRoy-Grani- te tournament team. Box Elders Scott Hill was named M.V.P., though his team finished out of the running and was defeated twice in tournament play. Three Roy men made the ten-ma-n all-stteam with only Box Elder and Layton placing more than one player on the select group. Seniors Bert Rich and Dennis Adams were joined by 68 sophomore Robb Thomas on the honored ten. The also included Mark Hill of Box Elder, Gary Miller of Bear River, Mark Reed and Dave Burke of Layton, Ron Butterfield of Granite and Brent Applegate of Tooele. Uintah won the Sportsmanship Trophy. Granite was first in the standings followed by Roy, Viewmont and Tooele. It's interesting to note that Viewmont and Tooele lost only to the Royals in three days of competition. ar all-sta- rs Bert Rich earned his spot on team by his adept and tenacious defense al guard. They usually gave Rich the tough man out the ail-st- ar ball-handli- front. Adams was to the post position but was moved in !he wing :o make room for 68 Robb Thomas. Adams is versatile and played well in his new position. His ankle was still weak from a sprain in the Ogden game, but he did his job. Surprise of the Roy team this Robb season, is Super-Soph- ., Thomas. The coaches anticipate a great future for their rookie center, but had figured he was still a season away. Robb fooled everyone by playing three out Dennis heir-appare- nt standing games and winning all-sthonors in this, his first high school tournament. Thomas played the post against Highland when Dennis Adams was injured and thats when they moved Dennis out to the wing. Robb Thomas has created a lot excitement among the Royal fans. Even now they are looking two years down stream when Thomas will be a few inches taller, and perhaps more seasoned. Robb earned his spurs at Brigham City and has already made great ar contributions to the young Royal team. Cort Murdock while not the scoring threat of his teammates, did his own thing at the other end of the floor. Cort is a demon on defense and played a major role in Roys success at the Box Elder High Basketball Classic. Troy Bullard shared playing time with Weidemeier and gave added strength to Roy under both boards. Steve Scholtec, another sophomore star out of Roy Junior, came off the bench to spell the front line. Enough cannot be said of the coaching of Ted Smith. Heres a team that lost all but one starter from last years Region One championship team. All seven of this years seniors played junior varsity ball last year. Four of them dressed with the varsity but only Dennis Adams played enough to earn a letter. Ted has worked hard with liis kids and they have gone the extra mile for him. None of his seniors are 13 considered major college material, but they dont know that, and before Ted Smith gets through with them, they might just surprise everyone. Roy travels to East High School for a 2:00 game Thursday, and entertains Brighton Friday at 2:00p.m. on the Royal floor. East is considered in the top three in Utah and Brighton is one of the top three in Region Two. Both games will be rugged tests for the Royals. Weber's Miya and Swenson make No. 1 duo 4 If any team in Region One has a chance of curtailing Clearfields chances of winning another womens basketball title, it has to be Weber with Mae Miya and Lori Swenson on board. Both are seniors, both are addicted to sports and both have already been on one region championship team this year, wanting in the worst kind 6f way to be on another. Better watch it Gearfield! There isnt anywhere to go but up after our 4 season last year, said Miya. And Lori added, The J.V. program has aided us a great deal and will make a big difference in our team. Swenson has always enjoyed the commenting that her family are avid campers. This she explains is one big reason why she learned to love sports, especially tennis and other outdoor activities. Last fall at Weber, Lori performed as a No. 1 Doubles player and helped the Warriors to the Region One championship in that sport. The Miya family has always been sports oner ted. Maes mother was a ping pong champion in Japan while her father played a lot of basketball when younger. Both of Maes parents were bom in Clinton, Utah. Her mother moved back to Japan for a short while but later returned to meet her husband. Weve always done sports minded things in our family. I can still remember Willie Sojourner and all the times that we used to go and see him play, said Mae. Both girls are actively involved in Weber High leadership roles. Mae is presently serving as the and Lori is the girls Studentbody association secretary. Swenson feels the tennis championship in the fall will while Mae who was on the No. 1 help her attitude-wis- e volleyball team in the region says, Id hate to break our string, referring to the three region championships the women have already garnered at the school. Both would like nothing more than to attend college after high school. Why? Lon answers, I want to go away and just see if I can handle it. Mae commented, Maybe Ill become a professional high school student, she joked. Coact. Jan Keim claimed her two senior basketball stars ai both outstanding leaders. About Mae she said, Mae is so willing to lead the way. Shes our team captain this year. She is a very , with person. She makes up for some of the natural ability she lacks with lots of hard work. Commenting on Lori, Keim stated, I have a great deal of respect for Lori. Shes on an e high all of the time. She enjoys her association with people. When Lori first came to play basketball as a sophomore, she just didnt have it. But during the offseason she worked overtime to develop her skills. She shocked me to death the next year by leading our team in scoring. That says it all for her athletic ability." vice-preside- all-tim- |
