'v' .'s'1 be some of the top will McMahon family loves fheir Jimmy Last Saturday I enjoyed the entire day, despite the cold weather and the chilly conditions that existed. Almost all the day was spent in the outdoors, temperatures dipping real low and snow being a big subject of the day. I priveleged to spend most of the day with a family that really grown close to over the years, the McMahons of Roy, Utah. Jimmy their son, is in his sophomore year at Brigham Young University where he has recently taken over the head quarterbacking duties for the team. Its a story in itself how Jimmy has taken over the quarterback job and led the Cougars to the Western Athletic Conference Championship. Jim will be coming back to Roy this weekend and at that time well get together and get the inside storv. But the McMahon family as a whole is proud of their Jimmy and the accomplishments he as made, not only in college but throughout all his athletic career. I was sincerely impressed the way the family roots for one another and stays together. Jim and Roberta McMahon are the parents of six children with the oldest being 20 and the youngest 12. There is something special in that family and I just wished last Saturday as I drove to Provo and back with them, that others could feel the closeness that I felt. With two weeks of preseason practice behind him, Weber State basketball coach Neil McCarthy is pleased with the team and optimistic about their prospects. We have made excellent progress up to this point, last years Big Sky Conference Coach-of-the-Ye- commented. Our players are in excellent physical condition, they are playing with great enthusiasm and intensity, and I believe they are mentally ready for the upcoming season. The Wildcats, defending Big Sky Conference champions return six lettermen from last years squad entire starting five. including Additionally, the ranks have been tf supported with seven excellent : ' newcomers. The two weeks of practice thus far have been primarily confined to working on individual technical skills and conditioning. McCarthy says they will begin working on team drills during the coming week. I believe we will be an improved team this season which is important because the conference has the most balance it has ahd in several year-s,- " You would McCarthy said. have to say that we will be contenders for the championship again this year, but I would also say Gonzaga, Idaho State, and Montana will also be in contention. With five new coaches it is a little difficult to predict accurately what may happen, but I would not rule out any team having the possibility of getting into the tournament. We expect the best but we are preparing for the worst. Mark Mattos, a junior guard, has had his cast removed after breaking the same bone in the same hand that sidelined him fnr the first eight games last season. Mattos will share captain g honors this year with returning Sky player Bruce Collins.. While expressing pleasure with the early season performance of his lettermen, McCarthy was also high in praise for the newcomers. Gerald Mattinson, Todd Harper, and Steve Condie are learning the system very well and show find promise. They could make some substantial contributions this year. Little Freddie Williams is very im- - moose, buffalo and waterfowl are prime tools in determining proper management technique by which the migration patterns of animals may be traced by use of radio transmitters. On the whole, I am very pleased with our progress and feel that we are right on schedule in preparing for the coming season. You can bet that everyone of the McMahon clan will be in attendance, they are already planning the trip. I plan to be there too, how about you? The family has already traveled to Arizona and Oregon this year to see Jimmy perform. The trip to Oregon was rewarding since McMahon entered the game late and lifted the Cougars to a victory over Oregon, Mr. and Mrs. McMahon are planning to travel with Jim and the team to Japan later in the month. Last year they made the same trip which they say was unforgettable. Memories that will last a lifetime, and it seems that every day something new takes place that all can get excited about. come-from-behi- Throttling a light aircraft to 65 per hour and cruising 150 feet above rough mountainous terrain would be a gamble for most pilots. In addition, many of Utahs high mountain lakes are accessible for fish stocking only by aircraft. Aerial telemetry (radio monitoring of game) is a fairly recent game 17-1- The first time I met Jimmy and saw him perform, I had no doubt in my mind that he was headed for a super career, barring injuries. He was a junior at Roy High the year we got to know each other and he was the Royals star quarterback. On the basketball court he started and was a star most of the time. He was Coach Fred Thompsons ace on the pitching mound. I missed his senior year in high school, the year that he really made the headlines. Last year was missed also when Jim performed as a punter for the BYU team. Injuries havent hampered the Cougar quarterback to the extent he couldnt suit up, but team doctors do say that Jim will undergo surgery this winter because of problems he is having with his knees. The operation and recovery is expected to take about six weeks. Mr. McMahon in my opinion is the biggest fan of Jimmy in the family. He is extremely proud of his son and attends every game if possible. Hes known to be early for games, something Uke an hour and a half. Occasionally they may respond to emergency calls for fire control or search-and-rescu- e missions. The pilots are responsible for maintaining the Divisions three Cessna airplanes. Contrary to a popular mistaken notion, the Division has never owned a helicopter in its history of aerial game monitoring according to chief pilot, Ralph Noble. When snow and cold hits Utah during the next few weeks, aerial elk census surveys will begin. During cold weather, elk tend to bunch together for warmth and are easy to spot against the white landscape. Flying low and slow, the pilots are able to estimate animal numbers in elk herds of several hundred. Elk do not spook easily at the sight of an aircraft. However, cruising directly over the herd is avoided, unless scattering the animals will facilitate a more accurate count. Noble says that by counting elk in 16 different units each winter, an estimation of herd population trends may be obtained. Spring and summer may find the DWR pilots in antelope country. Antelope monitoring is conducted before fawning season and again later in the summer. During July and August, DWR pilots take to the air with loads of fingerling fish for 300 high mountain lakes. To drop their live cargo, the pilots will sometimes swoop to within 100 feet of the surface. Noble admits that danger is a way of life for DWR pilots. But he notes with satisfaction that no serious injuries have occurred in his 23 years with the Division. Currently the three pilots are logging more than 1500 hours annually by assisting biologists in the management of Utahs fish and wildlife. 25-ye- ar Jimmy was star at Roy pre-gam- Noble, Churck Morris and Paul Miley, THE McMAHON FAMILY a few years back.
