The public is invited, and there is McKay-De- no charge. Speakers are Dr. J. Ralph Macfarlane, cardiovascular surgeon, who will discuss the causes and prevention of stroke, and Dr. John Bender, McKay-De- e Rehabilitation Center Director, who will talk about stroke rehabilitation and show slides about the subject. A question and answer period will follow. Dr. Bender said about 300.000 new strokes occur each year in the United States. About 1.8 million Americans have living suffered strokes, and from 160 to 200 strokes occur per 100,000 population per year. This means that atout 160 to 200 strokes per year take place in the Ogden area. About half the stroke victims are still alive after six months and 10 per cent are still alive after 10 years, so patients and their families must deal with long-terdisability, Dr. Bender explained. About 35 per cent have minor neurologic defects and recover with little disability, but 55 per cent suffer major disability with most of them needing rehabilitation professional assistance. About 40 per cent of the admissions to the McKay-De- e Rehabilitation Center are for stroke, about 80 patients per year, and 85 per cent of them will be discharged to their own homes or families.
