School and Horn? by Dr. Daryl J. McCarty Executive Secretory Utah Education Association If you've ever wondered why Americans dont spell honor the way the English do, heres why: Its because a patriotic school teacher decided after the Revolutionary War that Americans should spell it their own way, and not honour." That teacher was Noah Webster, who published the famous old speller and the first dictionary that bore his name. The reason for discussing this subject is that the second annual statewide spelling bee is getting underway here in Utah. Schools throughout the state have been invited to hold class and school spelling competition, which will be completed by March 3. By March 17, each school district in the state should have held a contest to name a representative to the State Spelling Bee on April 14. Youngsters aged 8 to 14 w ill be memorizing the spelling of such words as "accommodate," rhythm, turquoise." "chauffeur," buoyant," "camouflaged," chlorophyll," and fluorescent." Of course, spelling bees are not the only method of teaching spelling. It's entirely possible that a youngster may memorize the spelling of every word used in a contest, then turn in an essay the following week with several very simple words misspelled. This happens because w ords used in the contest are not Biways the same ones students use when they w rite essays. Simple words, such as "friend" becomes freind" on the essay; "your" is misspelled "you're" and too" is wrongly spelled "to. Teachers realize that student writing is a real test of spelling skill. However, the spelling bee can heighten a students' awareness that arranging words in their proper letter sequence is important. And when a contest also recognizes students for improving, as well as winning, the experience is even more valuable. Noah Webster would probably agree with giving "honor" to those who improve. blue-backe- d I Ig Helds Some courses conclude with on the job training. I was anxious to show them how much fun it would be to do something really creative! I had fond memories of pulling long skeins of satiny taffy and creating fluffy clouds of divinity and rich squares of fudge, with just a little help from my mother, as a child. We did have fun, but somehow there was quite a wide disparity between reality and my fond memories. After a couple of hours, we had nothing lhai even remotely resembled anything rich, satiny or fluffy. What we had was GOO. Goo on the table. Goo on the floor. Goo on the walls, chairs, kids and 27 dishes. Ther-- was even goo on the ceiling. There was even goo on the CAT! Eventually we did find some recipes which lend themselves to the ineptitude of kids. But the funny thing is, my kids still look back nostalgically at that fun night we made lots of candy. Leland Burningham once a month to discuss various programs and problems with the Weber School District. These issues are then taken back to each schools council for discussion or referred to the School Board, which ever is appropriate. This month the focus was on the Math program. Bruce Griffin, Dr. James West and Dwayne Manful, from the District office were special guest speakers. They told of the d stricts efforts in the past few years to upgrade the Math program and standardize it throughout the schools. BurninSuperintendent gham stated that significant improvement had been made, according to the nationwide Stanford Achievement tests in the last year. He said the goal of the school district systematically to is teach sequencial skills to all of the children, in all of the basic areas. The district has put a great deal of money, planning and effort into standardizing and upgrading the teaching of these basic skills the district, throughout according to Superintendent Burningham. One of the inovations is accurate records showing specifically what skills have been mastered by each student. It was stressed that parents may have free ac- cess to these records. Another thrust is planning on a district level with department heads from each school, on a regular basis. New text books, geared to the ability of the students, and supplimentary materials, both for students who need extra help and those who can use enrichment activities, have been purchased. We are not just trying to keep kids busy, but to fullfill a specific need," Mr. Manful stated.
