Show k 4D Lakeside Review North, Wednesday, Dee. 7, 1983 Telemarking Invades the Big Slopes SHELLEY KANCITIS Review Correspondent If youve perfected your paralof swooshing down slopes the same old lel turns and are tired way, try telemarking. Named after a county in Nor- way, telemark means a type of turn typically used by cross country skiers, but now invading downhill resorts. It is a rapidly expanding trend, according to George Hardman, western operations manager for Rossignol. People like it because its something new and different. A lot of skiers are doing both regular downhill skiing and telemarking. Done on cross country skis, a well executed telemark turn has a graceful, dance-lik- e quality. It feels awkward at first, but its not hard once you get the hang of it, said DaniMiller, a down hill and cross country skier. Unlike downhill skiing in which a skier bends his knees with feet togetheif using both skis to turn, telemafking relies on one ski at a time for turning. One leg is practically straight while the other is in almost a deep knee bend, said Hardman. Without standing up, the skier shifts his weight and reverses the position of his legs. If you do the turn right, both skis are lined up making it look like one 12 foot long ski, said Miller. Hardman said telemarking is usually done on metal edged cross country skis. Rossignol now offers three types of skis designed for telemark skiing. Two models have a cross country flex with greater stiffness under the foot. The has a traditional alpine flex and is more effective if alpine techniques are used. You have less control when skiing down hill on cross country skis. said Miller, but there is a greater sense of accomplishment since you have succeeded at doing something unnatural. Another design advance is the ROUTER symmetrical side cut, a feature 5007NB. BLOCK SANDER that affects the skis proportions and makes turning easier. A new ski made by Kastle, the Super G, uses this design along with other brands. Introduction of newer materials have also made skis more responsive. Dynastar Omega, for example, now uses elasteel, a new material that makes the ski more responsive and better for all around skiing. Its like adding power steering in a car. The ski is easier to turn, explained Ms. Miller. Bindings, the glue that holds skis and boots together, are generally similar to last years models. A continuing trend is increased use of plastic. This makes bindings lighter weight and stronger, said Williams. Although the diagonal release was available last year, Williams said the Tyrolia binding has gone one step farther. Its the only binding that offers a total diagonal release concept. Williams said this design enables the binding to sense upward pressure more accurately, giving a quicker release when necessary. A quick release is important in preventing injuries, most of which are caused by slow twisting falls. Whether one buys the latest equipment or uses last years models, Ms. Miller offers wise advice.
