The request, made by Bountiful High PTSA President, Kathleen Johnson in a letter to the school board, said the directory would give a .feeling of cohesiveness to the students and families of the school. But Board Superintendent Lawrence Welling said the school board has tried to keep in line with a 1977 Utah State School Board guideline which protects student records without the approval of the parents. I do believe that we have a real need to be careful on what we release, Welling said. Welling told the board that he thought those kinds of informa- - tion should remain private. We have been cautious in the handling of the students record; I would hate to do otherwise. He said if the board was to allow the directory, the parents endorsement should also be considered. But Mrs. Johnson said that when her family lived in Salt Lake City and her children attended East High there were no harrassing calls or junk mail as a result of the directory. Instead, the directories were of great help to the parents and students. She said her group has talked to parents from schools which have school directories and found that no problems stemmed from the directories. Board President Sheryl Allen said it might be worth a try if it was on a basis. The board passed the motion to give the names, numbers and addresses of the students without the parents approval. one-ye- ar Father's Day Big Time for Phoning Fathers Day has joined should hang up and try again a few minutes later.
