Show UTAH LABOR NEWS. SALT LAKE CITY. UTAH, OCTOBER 28. 1938 Industrial Unions Make For Peace A. F. L. LEADERS IIIT FOR SEEKING CHANGES IN WAGNER ACT (The following article is an anal-lysof the report of President Roosevelts commission sent to England last summer to study British labor relations. Paul Y. Anderson, its author, is a political and feature writer on the staff of the St. Louis one of the nation's foremost dailies.) is commission makes all this very clear. It also makes very cleaV why strikes in Great Britain are almost never marked by violence. The ex planation is neatly summed up in one line: The attitude of the employer is that the job belongs to the man. It goes on to explain that, in the rare instances where strikes do never occur, the management makes the slightest attempt to Te place the strikers. The strike breaker is one typo of vermin which is extinct in Great Britain. Closes Plants If the strike is sufficiently sue cesful to make continued opera tions impracticable, the employer simply closes his plant and redoubles his efforts to reach an agreement with his workers. In cases where partial operations are practicable, the employer still makes no attempt to fill the jobs of the workers who are out. Such an attempt, the commission declares, would be resented not only by the workers, but by other employers. The latter would realize that orderly labor relations everywhere were imperiled by such methods, and British em ployers have learned that orderly labor relations are essential ta the efficient functioning of British industry. No Girdlers Industrial Neanderthalers of the type of Girdler, Ford, Rand, Grace and Weir wmuld not be tolerated for a minute in Great Britain. They would be recognized as dangerous to the whole national econ omy, and the industrial and finan rial powers of the nation would make short work of them. Now, I am well aware that most, if not all, of what I have written here is already known to a majority of my readers. The facts laboriously recited in the commissions report have long been common knowledge among persons familiar with the history of organized labor. Publicity Needed It might appear, therefore, that what I ani doing here is to waste a lot of good white paper. The fact is, however, that this publication has a very large audience among employers and public officials and what they dont know about the labor movement would fill more space than I shall consume here. It is mainly for their education that the. foregoing has ben painfully set down. The drive to emasculate the Wagner Act has not abated in the Quite the contrary. slightest. American workers are now compelled to contend not only with the efforts of the Girdlers, Fords and Rands, but also with the mouthings of Bill Green and the activities of those who dictate his utterances. But there is one substantial crumb of comfort in the spectacle: none of these enemies of the workers are going to get any ammunition out of the report of Great Britain not unless it is mighty STORING POTATOES? Page consumers should make the fire from the top down rather than from the bottom up. Build the fire with the coal first, then the kindling, and then the paper. This reduces smoke and gives heat more efficiently. When coal is added to the fire, instead of shoveling the coal over the top of the fire, push the hot coals to the back or to one side so as to create a pocket into which to shovel the fresh coal. Bituminous coal consumers have a representative in Washington: the Consumers Counsel of the National Bituminous Coal Commission. For further information on coal problems, the Consumers Guide recommends that consumers communicate with him. should the coat show defects with Keep your potatoes in the dark if you plan to store them in your 7 normal use. To make sure you are getting a good quality wool coat, look for springiness and aliveness. Good coarse types of wool are best suited for hard wear. Soft fine wools are adapted for dress coats. Dont buy poor quality wool coats at' any price. They are uneven, harsh, and stubby, with most of the natural qualities of the wool destroyed. These fabrics feel heavy and boardy and have no springiness. Coats made of such material become baggy; the material looks matted and dull. Examine a coat fabric on both sides. For durability you will want a firm weave without loops on the surface to snag. Pull the fabric both ways to see if it stretches too much. All materials should be thoroughly shrunk, and colors should be fast to sun, rain, cleaning, and colors. To judge the workmanship on the coat look for short stitches in the seams, and a strong thread. Each part of the coat should have received a thorough pressing before the coat .was put together. cellar this winter, advises the Con Burners Guide. Potatoes stored in a light place will soon sprout.
