THOMPSON Office Manager QUESTIONS BOTHERING THE PEACEMAKERS Woodruff Randolph in the Typographical Journal lists questions bothering the labor peacemakers in the controversy between the C. I. 0. and A. F. L. They are as follows: 1. Should the A. F. of L. be an authoritative body with full power belonging to the executive council and convention? 2. If the C. I. 0. is to come into the A. F. of L., shall it come in as it is now with 3,800,000 members or shall it come in as it was at the time it was suspended and in so doing permit the executive council of the A. F. of L. to parcel out the 2,800,000 members organized since the inception of the C. I. 0., industries sent representatives to the meeting called to set up the machinery by which greater organization and education of the workers of the state could be accomplished. Nearly twice as many delegates attended as were expected including a number of Negroes, and much enthusiasm was displayed, leaders reported. Among the outstanding resolutions passed was one advocating the immediate abolition of the poll tax. This tax was denounced from the floor by a number of delegates who brought out that it had disfranchised about 80 per cent of the states white and colored voters. William Mitch, president of District 20, United Mine Workers, and regional director for the Steel Workers Organizing Committee was elected president of the Stat1 Industrial Council by acclamation. Yelverton Cowherd, C. I. 0. regional director, was elected secretary-treasure- r. Five vice presidents for the coming year were also elected. Rathbone, secretary of the C. I. 0. maritime committee. They will be chartered as one local under the International Longshoremens and Warehousemens Union, of which Harry Bridges is president. This makes the second large group to leave the organization controlled by the gangster rule of Joseph I. Ryan, I. L. A. president, Rathbone said.
